Ronica N. Rooks, Cassandra D. Ford
Health (Health) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/health.2016.84034
Abstract: Background: We examined family health history (FHH) as a public health intervention tool in undergraduate students. We hypothesized that the FHH assignment would positively relate to students’ FHH knowledge and health and healthcare-seeking behavioral change. Methods: Health professional students’ (n = 103) pre/post-test surveys and research papers were collected in 2011-2012, from a mid-western and southern university in the United States of America, using mixed methods research. Results: The majority of students were aged 18 - 30, women, White, had healthcare access and health insurance, and awareness of the term FHH. Significant logistic regression relationships existed between: 1) helping students understand important strengths and weaknesses in their health and quality of life and outcomes of talking with family and doctors about FHH; and 2) improving students’ understanding of what they needed to do to maintain their health and the outcome statement “FHH tells you about inherited genes.” Key themes from the research papers included actions and FHH and proposed behavioral changes. Conclusions: Quantitative findings supported the relationship between students’ assignment evaluation and knowledge change, while qualitative findings supported relationships between assignment evaluation and knowledge and behavioral change. This study highlights regional differences in students’ FHH and the need to address family support barriers to behavioral change.

Open Journal of Social Sciences (JSS) , 2020, DOI: 10.4236/jss.2020.812014
Abstract: Introduction: International students experience acculturative stress during the adaptation period into a new country, leading to the development of mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. This issue may be particularly important for international students in the health professions who are exposed to more stressors than usual. This study aims to determine the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and associated factors among international students in the health professions. Methods: This study employed a descriptive cross-sectional research design. A sample of 114 international students from Southern Medical University (SMU) was screened for depression and anxiety using the Hospital Anxiety and Depressive Scale (HADS) during the 2019-2020 academic year. Descriptive statistics, including percentages and frequencies, were performed to determine the prevalence of depression and anxiety. Multiple linear regression analysis was utilized to examine associations between depression and anxiety and socio-demographic characteristics. Results: Overall, the prevalence of depression and anxiety was found to be 36% and 52.63%, respectively. Undergraduate students studying medicine and postgraduates pursuing master’s degrees in Plastic Surgery and Laboratory Science had the highest levels of anxiety (60%), while Ph.D. students had the highest level of depression (50%). The period of study in China (p = 0.037), the discipline of study (p = 0.004), and the level of preparedness for coming to China (p = 0.037) were significant predictors of depression, while the discipline of study (

Food and Nutrition Sciences (FNS) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/fns.2012.37124
Abstract: The purpose of this research was to assess money spent and calories consumed by college students from fast food restaurants located on and around a southern college campus. A convenience sample (n = 152) of undergraduate college students (aged 18 - 24) at a southern university participated in a survey that measured dietary intake from seven local fast food chains using a researcher developed food frequency questionnaire and a lifestyle behavior survey that collected data on health practices. A strong positive correlation was found between total monthly fast food expense and total monthly fast food caloric consumption (r(150) = 0.94, p < 0.05), indicating a significant linear relationship between the two variables. An independent-samples t test comparing the mean monthly fast food restaurant expense males to females found a significant difference between the two groups (t(150) = 4.19, p < 0.05).The more money spent by college students contributed to a higher amount of calories consumed from fast food in a typical month. Future research needs to determine if college students are contributing to the high obesity rate and if limiting fast food restaurants on and around college campuses would help decrease fast food consumption in college students.

Open Journal of Preventive Medicine (OJPM) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ojpm.2012.22018
Abstract: Background: To date no study on the body weight of medical students in Inner Mongolia has been carried out. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of and factors associated with various body weight levels, and the physical health status associated with body weight levels among medical students attending the Inner Mongolia Medical College of China in 2011. Methods: Data on participant characteristics came from basic information contained in the school database. Students’ body weight was categorized using standard height and weight and physical health status using the college student physical health standard. Factors associated with various level of body weight were identified using multinomial logistic regression analysis. Results: The sample comprised 2060 males and 5096 females. The appropriate body weight prevalence among the students was 51.7%. The prevalence of being overweight or obese was 5.8 and 8.5%, respecttively, higher compared to the typical prevalence among college students in China. Both male and female students in the 24-28-years age group had the lowest appropriate weight percentage and the highest obesity percentage among all the age groups. For female medical students, the prevalence of obesity for students studying in Clinical Medicine was higher than for other faculties. Multinomial logistic regression analysis of male students showed that lowest year of education (year 1) was a protective factor in regard to appropriate weight. For both male and female medical students, the obese group had the highest proportion of poor physical health status compared to other categories of body weight and the proportion with excellent physiccal health status constituted < 1% for males and 0% for females. Conclusions: School administrators should encourage medical students to actively participate in body weight training and education to improve attitudes toward inappropriate body weight, to increase protective factors, and reduce the risk factors for inappropriate body weight.

Psychology (PSYCH) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2012.38084
Abstract: Students is a very specific population according to their manner to cope with stress. A coping questionnaire for students was developed and administered to 1100 French students at the beginning of the term (T1). Principal Component Analysis of responses, followed by varimax rotations, yielded three factors accounting for 50.5% of the total variance. Factors were identified as seeking social support, avoidance/emotion-focused coping and festive-addictive coping. Associations were observed between scores on these factors and a general coping scale (WCC-R), personal variables measured at the same time (T1), neuroticism, self-esteem, substance use, and four stress factors, as well as variables measured at the end of the term (T2), somatic symptoms, depressive symptoms, eating disorders, and life satisfaction. It would be very interesting to develop the students’ personal competencies, so that they are learning how to adopt functional strategies of coping rather than of the harmful kind.
