Abstract: Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an escalating public health threat in sub-Saharan Africa, where local surveillance data remain limited, including in Gabon. This study aimed to describe the antimicrobial resistance profile of bacterial isolates from uro-genital infections in the southern Libreville region over the year 2025. Methods: Retrospective cross-sectional study of 477 clinical specimens processed with an automated identification and susceptibility testing system. After excluding yeasts (n = 199), 278 bacterial isolates were included. Resistance status per antibiotic class was determined from resistance phenotypes and raw minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs); MIC50 and MIC90 values were calculated for key antibiotics in Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus spp. Proportions are reported with 95% confidence intervals (Wilson method). Results: The population was predominantly female (76.3%), with urine cytobacteriological examination (43.8%) and combined genito-urinary specimens (40.7%) as the leading specimen types. Escherichia coli (35.6%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (14.7%) were the most frequent bacterial isolates. High resistance was observed for trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (98.3%) and beta-lactams (79.3%), with an MIC90 for cefotaxime and ceftriaxone ≥ 64 mg/L in both E. coli and K. pneumoniae, suggestive of a high prevalence of ESBL production. More than half of all bacterial isolates (56.5%) were resistant to at least three antibiotic classes, meeting a standard multidrug-resistance (MDR) definition. Direct analysis of vancomycin MICs (MIC50 0.75 - 1 mg/L, MIC90 1 mg/L) revealed no glycopeptide resistance among Staphylococcus spp., contradicting an initially discordant automated derived indicator. Conclusion: These data confirm a high level of resistance to first-line antibiotics among uropathogens in the southern Libreville region, consistent with published data from other Gabonese and sub-Saharan African sites, and highlight fosfomycin, nitrofurantoin, and carbapenems as valuable therapeutic options of last resort.Subject AreasMicrobiology

Abstract: Viral hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) infections are endemic in Africa. According to seroprevalence studies, HBV is found in roughly 8% of individuals, while HCV is found in more than 1% of individuals in the general population. HBV and HCV infections are more likely to occur in children with sickle cell disease because of the need for multiple blood transfusions. This pilot study was intended to evaluate the frequency of HBsAg and antibodies against HCV in sickle cell patients at CHU Amissa Bongo of Franceville. Blood samples were collected for this study from March 15 to May 27, 2022. The non-governmental organization NGO SCDOGa conducted the pilot study in collaboration with the Amissa Bongo CHU for patient recruitment and the detection of HBsAg and anti-HCV antibodies using rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA, Mini VIDAS). The Mixed Research Unit between the CIRMF and UMR CIRMF-SSM, performed PCR among RDT reactive samples. Up to 41 children with sickle cell disease, aged between 1 and 16 years, were recruited for the study. Among the participants, none were found to be carriers of HBsAg. Regarding anti-HCV antibodies, 2 out of 41 children tested positive on the rapid diagnostic test, representing a prevalence of 4.878%. Of these two, only one was confirmed positive via Nested PCR. The data indicated that the number of blood transfusions equal to or greater than three was associated with the transmission of HCV. In conclusion, this study found no carriers of HBsAg among children with sickle cell disease. However, a low prevalence of anti-HCV antibodies was observed, with half of the positive cases exhibiting a replicative infection.

Abstract: This comprehensive review paper explores various aspects of geotechnical engineering, with a focus on the management of unstable terrains, numerical methods for solving complex soil and consolidation problems, rheological analysis of suspensions and muddy soils, and stability analysis of slopes. It begins by examining the unique physicochemical properties of cohesive sediments, including cohesion and specific surface area. The temporal evolution of deposit concentration and average bed concentration in unstable terrains is discussed, along with settling behavior of isolated particles and hindered settling using empirical equations. Key sedimentation theories, such as Kynch’s theory, and geotechnical consolidation theories, including Terzaghi’s consolidation equation and Gibson’s theory, are presented. The investigation interrelates these theories and principles to offer a holistic view of managing unstable terrains. It also addresses the challenges associated with experimental determination of constitutive relationships and presents alternative simplification methods proposed by researchers. Additionally, it delves into numerical methods for solving nonlinear partial differential equations governing soil behavior, emphasizing the need for numerical frameworks and discussing various techniques and associated challenges. The rheological analysis section covers material flow behavior, rheological behavior models, and the rheological properties of water and cohesive sediment mixtures. Fundamental geotechnical calculations, constitutive laws, and failure criteria are explained, highlighting their relevance in geotechnical engineering applications. This paper provides a multidimensional perspective on geotechnical engineering, offering valuable insights into soil properties, consolidation processes, numerical methods, rheological analysis, and slope stability assessment for professionals in the field.

Abstract: This article systematically delves into a comprehensive analysis of the latest and most advanced techniques for the assessment of slope stability. It particularly focuses on strategies aimed at enhancing slope stability in road construction. In addition to this analysis, the article presents an illustrative case study centered on the Toffo-Lalo Road Project. The core objective of this paper is to scrutinize the stability of large embankments in road construction, with a specific emphasis on the development and asphalt overlay of the Toffo-Lalo road. This scrutiny is conducted through the utilization of stability calculation software, GEOSTUDIO2018, specifically its SLOPE/W module. Within this framework, a detailed model of the cutbank located at KP1+750-2+250 was meticulously developed. This model takes into account the physical-mechanical characteristics of the soil at the site, as well as the topographic layout. Its attributes include a cohesion value of 11.3 Kpa, a density of 16.57 KN/m3, and a friction angle of 27˚. The modeling results, employing the Morgenstern-Price method—an approach renowned for its adherence to equilibrium conditions and provision of precise results—conclude that the safety coefficient (Fs = 1.429) prior to any reinforcement signifies a critical state of slope stability. To address this, the article explores the implementation of reinforcement techniques, particularly focusing on rigid inclusions like nailing and piles. The modeling exercises reveal a noteworthy enhancement in the safety coefficient (Fs) post-reinforcement. Furthermore, the article undertakes a parametric study to optimize the reinforcement strategies. This analysis highlights that anchoring at 0˚ downward relative to the horizontal plane and employing a pile angle of 90˚ represent the most favorable approaches. These measures yield safety coefficients of 3.60 and 2.34, respectively, indicating substantially improved slope stability.

Abstract: In many developing countries, mothers’ awareness remains a challenge despite the scaling up of antenatal care and programs preventing mother-to-child (MTC) HIV transmission. The present study was done in Libreville, Gabon where all antenatal care (delivery included) is free of charge. Here we assessed the timing of antenatal antiretroviral (ARV) prophylaxis initiation, HIV-exposed infants’ age at their first postnatal HIV check visit and investigated the association between mothers’ awareness or knowledge on their ARV therapy and infants’ HIV infection. We interviewed HIV-positive mothers on their first and subsequent laboratory visits to investigate infants’ HIV status and tested infants for HIV RNA and antibody between 2012 and 2014. We established that (1) of 718 HIV-positive mothers, only 6% were fully aware and knew what ARV treatment they were on during pregnancy; (2) half of the women (54%) start their antenatal ARV prophylaxis initiation during the second trimester of pregnancy; (3) 64% of HIV-exposed infants had their first HIV infection screening between birth and three months of age; (4) the overall prevalence of HIV infection in infants born from infected mothers was 8.9%; and (5) infants born from mothers uncertain about taking prophylactic ARV therapy were 13.3 times more likely to be infected by HIV than infants born from mothers certain about taking prophylactic ARV therapy. In conclusion, the study showed that despite free antenatal care, early access and adherence to components of MTC, HIV transmission preventive care remains unsatisfactory

Abstract: The depositional environment of the sands of the cover formation is discussed. This study aims to determine the paleoenvironments of deposition of the sands of the cover formation in the Batéké Plateaus by studying sedimentary dynamics based on the description of lithological facies in the field and granulometric analyses in the laboratory. In the field, six (6) lithostratigraphic logs were surveyed and 42 sand samples were taken for laboratory analysis. In the laboratory, the samples underwent granulometric, sieving and sedimentometry analyses, after washing with running water using a 63 μm sieve. These analyses made it possible to determine the granulometric classes of the samples. The sieving results allowed to determine the granulometric parameters (mean, standard deviation, mode, median, skewness, flattening or kurtosis) using the method of moments with the software “Gradistat V.8”, granulometric parameters with which the granulometric facies, the mode of transport and the deposition environment were determined using the diagrams. Morphoscopy made it possible to determine the form and aspect of the surface of the quartz grains constituting these sands. Granulometric analyses show that these silty-clay or clayey-silty sands are fine sands and rarely medium sands, moderately to well sorted and rarely well sorted. The dominant granulometric facies is hyperbolic (sigmoid), with parabolic facies being rare. The primary mode of transport of these sands is saltation, which dominates rolling. The dispersion of points in the diagrams shows that these sands originate from two depositional environments: aeolian and fluvial. Morphoscopic analysis reveals the presence of clean rounded matt grains (RM), dirty rounded matt grains (RS), shiny blunt grains (EL) and shiny rounded grains (RL). The rounded matt grains exhibit several impact marks. The presence of dirty rounded grains with a ferruginous cement on their surface indicates that these sands have been reworked. These sands have undergone two types of transport, first by wind (aeolian environment) and then by water (fluvial environment).

Abstract: Introduction: The elbow is a superficial joint, particularly exposed to direct impact, forced movement, and overstrain. Our work aimed to study magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) pathologies of the soft tissues of the elbow through illustrative cases. Methodology: This was a retrospective and prospective cross-sectional study covering a period of one year, from June 2020 to June 2021, at the Saint Camille Hospital in Ouagadougou and the Polyclinique Notre Dame de la Paix. Results: In general, this study found that the pathologies diagnosed on MRI were lateral epicondylitis, subcutaneous type V elbow lipoma and liposarcoma, anteromedial cortical fracture of the radial cup, cortical detachment fracture of the lateral epicondylitis, medial epicondylitis, villonodular articular synovitis, simple dermo-hypodermatitis, sequellar fibrosis of the ulnar nerve, Workman's syndrome (median and ulnar nerves) and osteoarthritis of the elbow. Lateral epicondylitis was the most frequent pathology, and most patients consulted for elbow pain predominantly associated with pressure on the epicondyle, with relative functional impotence and, occasionally, elbow swelling. Conclusion: MRI, as a complement to ultrasound and radiography, remains the most informative examination for exploring soft-tissue pathologies of the elbow.

Abstract: This study investigates the geotechnical and geochemical characteristics of lateritic soils along the Maroua-Mora corridor in the semi-arid Far North region of Cameroon, with the aim of assessing their suitability for road construction applications. Eight representative soil samples were collected and analyzed through standardized laboratory tests, including particle size distribution, Atterberg limits, Modified Proctor compaction, California Bearing Ratio (CBR), and X-ray fluorescence (XRF). The results indicate that the soils are predominantly sandy to sandy-clayey, with coarse fractions ranging approximately from 58% to 77% and fines content between 23% and 42%, and varying from low to moderate plasticity (PI = 9 - 20). Compaction characteristics show maximum dry densities ranging from 2.060 to 2.157 g/cm3 and optimum moisture contents between 6.8% and 12.3%. CBR values (15 - 40) classify most materials within S4-S5 categories, suitable for subgrade and foundation layers but marginal for base course applications without stabilization. Geochemical analysis reveals dominance of SiO2, Al2O3, and Fe2O3, reflecting varying degrees of lateritization. Soils enriched in sesquioxides exhibit improved mechanical performance due to natural cementation, whereas silica-rich materials show lower cohesion and require stabilization. The SiO2/(Al2O3 + Fe2O3) ratio emerges as a key parameter controlling engineering behavior. The study highlights the strong interdependence between geotechnical properties and geochemical composition, demonstrating that the performance of lateritic soils in semi-arid environments is governed by both mineralogical and compaction factors. This integrated approach provides a reliable framework for optimizing the use of local materials in road construction and contributes to sustainable infrastructure development in Sahelian regions.

Abstract: African societies, particularly Bantu, have structured their kinship systems around matrilineality, a system in which a man’s true children are children of sisters from the same mother. Indeed, in this system, the children of the sister from the same mother are the natural heirs of the uncles. At first glance, the logic of such kinship remains poorly understood, and the rationale is nonexistent. In this narrative review, we demonstrate that African ancestors possessed empirical knowledge (Information acquired by means of observation, experience, or experimentation) of maternal genetic inheritance, which influenced their social organization, inheritance practices, and the transmission of lineages. We find that the African kinship structure fully respects the scientific principles of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) inheritance, known to be exclusively mediated through the maternal line. This biological principle, formally established by modern genetics, suggests that African ancestral hereditary knowledge was not due to chance but rather to a deep understanding of the maternal lineage long before the discovery of mtDNA transmission. This article, which integrates anthropological analyses, historical narratives, and genetic research to explore the depth of African knowledge about heredity and kinship, closely parallels modern scientific knowledge about mitochondrial inheritance. Understanding this connection not only highlights the sophistication of indigenous African thought but also challenges the Eurocentric discourse that presents genetics as a recent Western innovation. By critically examining how African societies have structured their kinship systems through models of biological inheritance, this article demonstrates that African ancestral knowledge anticipated modern scientific discoveries. This convergence of anthropology and genetics underscores the need to recognize and value indigenous knowledge as a fundamental element in studying human ancestry and heredity.

Abstract: Epilepsy is a disorder in the nervous system which often causes a loss of consciousness. Traditional treatments are quiet a component of health care system in various populations in spite of the fact that well-established options are available. Most plants are used to treat epilepsy or those which have been verified for anticonvulsant activity were reported. Then, Costus afer is a plant of the Congolese flora used in traditional medicine for its many virtues. Therefore, the anticonvulsant activity of Costus afer was assessed with the strychnine convulsion induction test. Two tests were used for sedative activity such as the barbiturate sleep induction test and motor activity and finally the forced swimming test was also used to assess antidepressant activity. The results showed that the aqueous extract of Costus afer stems had no effects on strychnine-induced seizures at doses of 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg compared to the control group. However, the extract of Costus afer stems caused a very significant decrease in motricity at a dose of 500 mg/kg, showing a decrease in the onset time and a very significant increase in sleep duration like the reference molecule such as Diazepam. The aqueous extract of Costus afer stems also caused a decrease in immobility time in mice at a dose of 500 mg/kg.
