The deepening implementation of the Belt and Road (B&R) has created an urgent demand for multidisciplinary talents who meet the requirements of high-quality development of B&R. Only in this way can our country communicate cooperate, and connect with countries along B&R in the fields of politics, economy and culture, etc. On account of English is widely used in countries along B&R, this paper takes English and its varieties as examples. This article aims to explore the functional limitations of traditional Business English and Legal English in international commercial practices, and demonstrates the functional characteristics and pedagogical application value of Legal English for Business as an independent category of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). First, writers analyze the communicative function of Business English and the regulatory function of Legal English, as well as their functional divide and inadequacies in the context of international business. It then elaborates on three core functional characteristics of Legal English for Business that address these issues: the formality and accuracy serving authoritative construction, the comprehensiveness and interdisciplinarity integrating a three-dimensional knowledge system of law, business, and language, and the uniqueness reflected in complex sentence structures and nominalization. Based on this, guided by the talent demands under the B&R, the study constructs a corresponding system of teaching and practical strategies, proposing a practical teaching model centered on case guidance, simulated training, and role immersion, aimed at effectively enhancing learners’ professional language competence and practical skills. The research argues that a functional linguistic analysis of Legal English for Business and the
Socio-cognitive aspects of hedging in two legal discourse genres
Holly Vass
Ibérica , 2004,
Abstract: While there are many studies on hedging in a wide variety of disciplinary discourses, the field of Law, to date, has been largely overlooked. Moreover, most research on hedging approaches the phenomenon from either a textual or pragmatic perspective, and tends to compare the same genre across disciplines. By contrast, the objective of this study was to analyse hedging in two legal written discourse genres, namely U.S. Supreme Court opinions and American law review articles, from a comprehensive, socio-cognitive, intra-disciplinary perspective. Due to the essential roles of intuition and hedging competence in the identification of hedges, qualitative data gathering and interpretation techniques were used. Results indicate that differences between the two genres can be linked to certain prototypical features of the genres themselves, particularly context and communicative purposes. Therefore, it is possible to postulate that hedging is in fact genre-specific, at least insofar as legal genres are concerned. Further comparative research must be done to determine if the same is true in other fields as well.
A pivotal interactional role to oversee contract negotiation activity: Insights into a key interdisciplinary legal

- , 2019, DOI: 10.1177/1750481318817622
Abstract: Based on ethnographic and linguistic analyses, this article describes the discourse-related practices and interactional role behaviours of an experienced lawyer who assumed a pivotal role in the negotiation of a Mergers-and-Acquisitions (M&A) type transaction vis-a-vis a number of other legal and financial professionals. Set in an international business context, all communication took place in English and for the most part via email. Complex discursive processes facilitated close interdisciplinary engagement and, more particularly, required that a single individual assume a key interactional role to oversee and advance the negotiation activities. This pivotal role entailed the strategic use of language and discourse to negotiate, account for, and justify the various stages of the negotiation. In addition to textual analyses of the negotiated contract and attendant emails, interviews were conducted with the principal lawyer and her senior partner in order to examine the textual findings grounded in the organisational context of a law firm and produce an ontology of this negotiation process. These research findings could be used to assist novice lawyers and business professionals to understand some of the discourse strategies and interactional roles that are often so critical for commercial contract negotiation activities

Abstract: Legal language, as instrument of legal thought and closely linked to community social events, is derived from the most common terms and concepts of everyday life. The theoretical approach to the teaching of Legal English should therefore be organised around one main object: the linguistic performance in the field of Law in a social-cultural context. By using Adjunct- Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) rather than full CLIL in an integrated approach to the teaching of a foreign language and legal concepts, the teacher copes with teaching languages for specific purposes, preserving the quality of both language and content of the discipline. This paper addresses the benefits of integrating images in such an approach, in an English course to Law students, in order to facilitate language learning and avoid linguistic ambiguity in a discipline which cannot exist outside discourse.

Abstract: Foreign language teaching at the university level has taken on importance and value over the last decade due to global competition between institutions of higher education. For this reason, language educators are faced with the challenge of looking for innovative teaching methods, which not only stimulate and motivate their students while encouraging language acquisition, but also add an intercultural dimension. This teaching note proposes to analyze the use and impact of cinematic resources (film and television series) as resource materials on English for Legal Purposes (ELP) classes designed to promote learner awareness of Anglo-Saxon professional legal culture. After an initial overview of the theoretical background, the article then provides a summary of the method, results and observations. This didactic approach can be applied to any foreign language or discipline such as medical studies, sociolinguistics, psychology, etc.
