Amid the widespread integration of AI technology into education, applied universities—key institutions for developing technical talents—face both opportunities and challenges in fostering students’ self-discipline, self-awareness, and self-improvement (hereinafter called the “Three Selfs”). This paper begins with the empowering role of AI in education at applied universities and analyzes its specific contributions to improving self-discipline supervision, awakening self-awareness, and supporting self-improvement efforts. It also examines practical issues brought by AI, such as over-reliance and information overload. Using relevant cases and well-known theories, this paper offers practical solutions for applied universities to nurture students’ “Three Selfs” amid the rise of AI.
An Approach to a Universal System of Units  [PDF]
Salama Abdelhady
Journal of Electromagnetic Analysis and Applications (JEMAA) , 2010, DOI: 10.4236/jemaa.2010.29071
Abstract: According to many scientists, there are some redundancies in the SI system of units. Through an entropy approach that depends on a previous analogy between the electrical, mechanical and thermal fields; it was possible to introduce a system of units that removes such redundancies. According to the second law of thermodynamics, the temperature was defined as a quality of heat. Following a proved analogy, the electrical and magnetic potentials may represent also the qualities of electric and magnetic fluxes. According to published experimental results, the electric and the magnetic potentials generates also electromotive forces, EMF, that were measured by Al-Fe thermocouples. The chemical potential or the concentration gradient generates also an EMF, as in the concentration cells, which is measured here by the same Al-Fe thermocouple. Such measurement-results are introduced to define a unique scale for measuring the potentials or qualities of the thermal, chemical, electric, and magnetic fields. The mentioned qualities are not defined by directly measurable quantities, as length and time, but they are found as functions of dimensionless concentrations of mass or energy fluxes. Hence, the volt, as a unit of the introduced EMF scale for potentials measurement, is postulated as a dimensionless unit. Finally, a universal system of units that is based only on three dimensions; L, T, and E, and four fundamental units; meter, second, Joule and volt is introduced in this paper to delete the SI redundancies. The energy replaces the mass as a fundamental unit in the introduced US as it plays a dominant role in most of the scientific and engineering fields. The ampere is not included as a fundamental unit since the charge is considered as a form of energy that is measured in one of the US fundamental units, Joule. The candela and the mole were also not considered as fundamental units as they can be related to the selected fundamental units by appropriate numbers. The limited number of dimensions in the introduced US simplifies the application of the “π” dimensional theorem to find plausible relations between the main parameters that characterize many physical phenomena and the energy conversions and interactions.
Comparison of Sensory Qualities of Geographically Paired Organic and Conventional Red Wines from the Southwestern US with Differing Total Polyphenol Concentrations: A Randomized Pilot Study  [PDF]

Food and Nutrition Sciences (FNS) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/fns.2011.210154
Abstract: Dietary polyphenols, or phenolic compounds, are numerous, diverse, and ubiquitous phytochemicals occurring throughout the plant kingdom. They are important components of the human diet because of their capacity to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. In plants, polyphenols contribute to resistance to pathogens due to their potent astringency and function as phytoalexins. As a result, organic grapevines grown with reduced pesticides may be more stressed by pathogens than conventionally grown grapevines and presumably produce more polyphenols. Since polyphenols also play an important role in the sensory qualities of fruits and wines particularly involving astringency and bitterness, there may be differences that affect sensory perceptions of wine. This establishes a conundrum where dietary polyphenols are healthful but potentially unpalatable. We recruited and randomized 18 female participants (21 - 50 y) to one of five groups (3 - 4 per group). Each group evaluated the sensory qualities of a geographically paired organic (OW) and conventional wine (CW) and an artificially colored white wine placebo (PW) with significantly differing total polyphenol concentrations (TP). Participants reported for three visits (one wine per visit) where they consumed 5 ounces (150 mL) of wine over 15 minutes while completing the sensory survey. Sensory evaluations based on a Likert-type scale included visual, aroma, and taste perceptions and overall impressions (scale 0 - 10). In two wine pairs, the OW contained significantly more TP (3.49 and 5.86 g/L) than the respective CW (2.63 and 4.63 g/L). In two other wine pairs both produced by sustainable viticulture, the CW (5.23 and 8.38 g/L) contained sig- nificantly more TP than OW (4.55 and 3.70 g/L) and in one set the amounts were equivalent (4.10 and 4.17 g/L). The five PW averaged 1.26 ± 0.20 g/L. Although there were significant differences in TP content of test wines, the results indicated that no significant differences in either intensity or quality for any of the sensory qualities were detected be- tween paired OW and CW wines but both scored significantly higher than the PW, with significantly lower TP. We conclude in this pilot study that a subset of OW from the Southwestern US is perceived similarly to CW produced by the same vineyard even with significantly differing TP concentrations.

Abstract: The research selects 20 kindergarten teachers in urban and rural areas in Chongqing as the samples and adopts time sampling observation method to investigate into kindergarten teachers’ educational behaviors from seven perspectives, i.e. education & teaching, participation into children’s activities, daily behavioral management, observation& monitoring, custody and emotional expression, teachers’ daily activities and teachers’ personal activities. Research results show that kindergarten teachers’ educational behaviors have improved better than before and become more and more reasonable. However, there are still some problems, such as excessive teaching and requirements, inadequate listening to children’s ideas and stimulation of their initiatives, low effectiveness of evaluation on children’s behaviors, excessive orders and interventions in daily management, inadequate emotional exchanges between teachers and children, insufficient care for children’s individual demands, etc.
Qualities of High School Principal
- , 2012,
Abstract: Study focused on selected Bulgarian and international research findings related to personal qualities and leadership behaviors of high school principals is presented.Number of requirements toward educational institutions’ leaders, including those of high schools, is summarized and systematized. Empirically based study with a pool of 167 teachers and 166 parents of high school students aimed at identifying of high school principal’ qualities has been organized. Major findings and conclusions derived from the study show that high school principal is expected to perform the role of catalysts, to inspire, stimulate, orient and create appropriate climate in order to develop creative potentials of the entire pedagogical community. According both study groups (teachers and parents) efficiency and effectiveness of the school principal leadership role are predominantly based on his business and personal qualities. Parents view the stability of principal’s goodwill and the level of his/her sociability as very important. Major research finding is that required personal preconditions for the school principal are in fact qualities representing organic interrelation of psychological processes and conditions, which ensure optimal professional contacts and communication, and play a role of necessary circumstances for implementing and further development of the institutional goals

Abstract: Sa?etak This paper focuses on desirable qualities of teachers from students’ perspective. The paper presents the results of research the aim of which was to determine the lower secondary school students’ (N = 389) assessment of nature/biology teachers’ qualities, both their personal and pedagogical (teaching) qualities, as well as their way of communication and relationship with students. The obtained results indicate that there are gender-related differences in the students’ assessment of nature/biology teachers’ personal and pedagogical qualities, and their communication and relationship with students. Differences were also detected in students’ assessment of nature/biology teachers’ pedagogical qualities with regard to area in which the school is located. However, no statistically significant differences were found in the students’ assessment with regard to theclass they attend. The students claim that their nature/biology teachers’ work would be improved if it involved more frequent practical work done by students, group work, outdoor teaching, the use of (audio) visual material, play, or through clearer explanations and the use of humour in teachin

Journal of Environmental Protection (JEP) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/jep.2012.32028
Abstract: This study examines the effect of agrochemical used for faming in the Galma Dam area on the quality of water in the reservoir and well water around the reservoir. Nine sampling points upstream of the Galma Dam were randomly se- lected for the study. Also, six hand dug wells in use by adjacent communities were identified for ground water samples. The study covered the period July to September 2011. All measurements were in accordance with the Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater. The parameters measured and their mean concentrations from the reser- voir are in the order of: Chlorides (0.600 - 0.900 mg/l); Nitrates (0.009 - 0.019 mg/l); Bicarbonates; 0.444 - 1.900 mg/l); Total Phosphates (0.173 - 3.077 mg/l); Sulphates (0.617 - 3.587 mg/l); and pH (6.4 - 7.5). For the well water samples, the results ranged from 1.58 - 3.10 mg/l; 0.14 - 0.03 mg/l; 0.60 - 2.73 mg/l; 0.08 - 1.89 mg/l; 0.33 - 2.66 mg/l and 6.05 - 7.0 respectively in the order previously listed. The results were statistically analyzed using ANOVA at 95% confidence level. Chlorides showed no significant variation between sampling points but significant variation with dates of sam- pling for surface and well waters. Nitrates variations with both sampling points and dates of sampling were insignificant. Bicarbonates variations with sampling points and dates of sampling were highly significant. Total Phosphates and Sul- phates variations with sampling points and dates of sampling were insignificant and significant respectively. pH values variations with sampling points and dates of sampling were insignificant and highly significant respectively. Generally, the mean concentrations are within the WHO maximum limits of the parameters in drinking water and recommenda- tions were made regarding the use of agrochemicals for farming in the area.
Identifying “Good” Teachers for Gifted Students  [PDF]
Mahmood Khalil, Zaher Accariya
Creative Education (CE) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2016.73040
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to identify the unique features that gifted students perceive to be essential in their teachers. In this qualitative, one-year study, data and responses from 15 gifted students in a high school in an Arab village in northern Israel were gathered from interviews, students’ personal diaries, and “letters of recommendation” that they were asked to write. The findings revealed that gifted students defined a good teacher through three major categories: 1) qualities in teachers; 2) excellent teaching; and 3) the unique qualities of the individual student-teacher relationship. Teachers of gifted students should ideally have unique personal, intellectual, and didactic characteristics and a unique attitude that empowers their students to realize their potential. Students place more importance on the inherent personality of the teacher than on acquired teaching skills. The findings point to a need for assessment of teachers for both personality and professional qualifications before they are assigned to the gifted classroom, and for special courses to train teachers of gifted students.
