K’s Silent Defiance in Life & Time of Michael K from the Perspective of Kant’s Conception of Freedom

Zhuyujie Zou
The book Life & Time of Michael K is Coetzee’s great work, and won the Booker Prize. Life & Time of Michael K describes Michael K’s miserable fate in South Africa amid a civil war, but he faces suffering bravely through his silent defiance. Most studies, however, have focused on K’s silent defiance from postcolonial theory, Sartre’s existentialism, and Foucault’s theories of discipline and punishment, which overlooks the philosophical value of K’s silent defiance. To ad...

Master or Servant, Acquaintance or Stranger: An Interpretation of the Binary Characters in Waiting for Godot

Qinglong Ji
This thesis delves into the intricate dynamics of binary character relationships in Samuel Beckett’s seminal play Waiting for Godot through two central lenses: the master-servant dynamic and the acquaintance-stranger dichotomy. The first lens examines how Pozzo and Lucky’s relationship inverts Plato’s ideal of reason ruling over desire, presenting a world where unbridled desire (Pozzo) dominates and subjugates reason (Lucky). The second lens analyzes the relationship between Vladimir, E...

The Lane Houses in Blossoms Shanghai—The Origin and Development of Shikumen Culture in Shanghai

Qinpei Fan
This paper selects the lane houses, an important carrier in the novel Blossoms Shanghai, to explore the origin and development of citizen culture in Shanghai. The narrative of the novel starts from the 1950s, and the various forms of lives of ordinary people in the lane houses show us that this regional architecture and the living space provided by the lane houses give birth to a relatively conservative and introverted citizen culture (Shikumen Culture), which affects the citizens’ diet and livi...

Religious Dilemma in Waiting for Godot

Yudie Zhang
Waiting for Godot is a play by Irish playwright Samuel Beckett. There is a remarkable use of biblical material in Waiting for Godot by Beckett. A significant portion of the play is rooted in scriptural allusions. It should be noted that these biblical allusions are not intended to support religion, but rather to mock and challenge the validity of biblical doctrines. As some critics argue, references to biblical texts “may be ironic or even sarcastic”. Therefore, the article exp...
