When Love Is Not Enough: Parental Gatekeeping and the Dynamics of Grandparent-Grandchild Closeness  [PDF]
Gila E. Fruchter
Advances in Applied Sociology (AASoci) , 2026, DOI: 10.4236/aasoci.2026.169040
Abstract: Grandparents may experience substantially different levels of closeness with different grandchildren even when their underlying affection toward them is identical. This paper develops a dynamic model that distinguishes latent grandparental valuation from realized relational closeness, a composite of contact, intimacy, disclosure, and support. Closeness accumulates through costly grandparental relational investment, but the productivity of that investment depends on access to the grandchild and reciprocal engagement. The baseline optimal-control model shows that unequal observed closeness can arise without preference-based favoritism. We then introduce the quality of the grandparent’s relationship with the intervening parent or child-in-law and show that this relationship can mediate access and magnify differences in realized closeness. Next, a reduced-form adaptive extension allows parental gatekeeping to respond to perceived closeness differences across grandchildren. This feedback system admits a critical gatekeeping-sensitivity threshold: below the threshold, symmetric closeness is locally stable, whereas above it the symmetric state loses stability. An autonomy extension shows that increasing grandchild independence attenuates the gatekeeping channel; under full autonomy, current parental access no longer affects effective access, although closeness differences inherited from earlier periods decay only gradually. Numerical analysis illustrates convergence, amplification, and asymmetric steady-state solutions. The results show why closeness alone cannot distinguish unequal affection from unequal relational opportunity and how the middle generation’s influence changes over the grandchild’s life course.

To explore college students’ fear of compassion and its relationship with family relationships and psychological safety, this study employed five questionnaires: the Fear of Compassion Scale, the Parent-Child Relationship Scale, the Grandparent-Grandchild Relationship Scale, the Sibling Relationship Scale, and the Psychological Safety Scale. A total of 253 college students across China participated in the survey. The results revealed that: 1) When tested individually, parent-child relationships, sibling relationships, and grandparent-grandchild relationships each significantly and positively predicted college students’ psychological safety. When psychological safety was included as a mediating variable, psychological safety significantly and negatively predicted fear of compassion. However, the predictive effects of parent-child relationships, sibling relationships, and grandparent-grandchild relationships on fear of compassion were not significant, indicating that psychological safety fully mediated the relationships between grandparent-grandchild relationships, parent-child relationships, and sibling relationships and college students’ fear of compassion. 2) When parent-child relationships, grandparent-grandchild relationships, and sibling relationships were included in the same model, only parent-child relationships significantly and positively predicted college students’ psychological safety, while sibling and grandparent-grandchild relationships did not. After including psychological safety, psychological safety significantly and negatively predicted fear of compassion, but the predictive effect of parent-child relationships on fear of compassion was not significant.
Emerging Adults' Experiences of Grandparent Death
Amy Ringering,Eric Cooley,Juliana Vandenbroeke,Margaret M. Manoogian,Tamina Toray
- , 2018, DOI: 10.1177/0030222817693140
Abstract: This qualitative study examined the experience of grandparent death among 74 emerging adults enrolled in college. Guided by the life course perspective, the authors specifically explored (a) participant responses to the death, (b) how family systems were influenced by the loss of the grandparent, and (c) how grandparent death motivated life course transitions for emerging adults. The findings suggest that the death trajectory, level of attachment, the role the grandchild played in the family, as well as the coping style utilized affected participants' grief processes. This study underscores the importance of the grandchild–grandparent tie, how new death experiences create meaning and ritual, and how life course transitions are motivated when an older family member dies. Implications for providing support on college campuses when emerging adults experience grandparent death are highlighted

- , 2018, DOI: 10.1177/1090198117742441
Abstract: Background. Latino grandparents are often involved in rearing of grandchildren. However, their roles in promoting Latino children’s leisure time physical activity (LTPA) have been largely overlooked by researchers. Aim. The purpose of this study is to examine Latino grandparents’ involvement in and support for grandchildren’s (age 2-12) LTPA as well as issues facing Latino grandparents. Method. Participants included 53 Latino grandparents who lived with/cared for or used to live with/care for grandchildren of 2 to 12 years old in three low-income areas of Los Angeles County. Data were collected using 4 semistructured focus groups and 26 semistructured interviews. Transcribed data were systematically and iteratively coded and analyzed. Results. Latino grandparents perceived various benefits of physical activity to their grandchildren’s physical and mental health, and supported grandchildren’s LTPA directly and indirectly. The direct support included doing physical activity with grandchildren, taking grandchildren to places for physical activities, verbally asking grandchildren to do physical activities, and rewarding grandchildren for doing physical activities. The indirect support was made through providing suggestions to parents. Mothers usually regulated Latino grandparents’ involvement in or support for grandchildren’s LTPA and tended to promote a maternal lineage. Some Latino grandparents reported barriers to supporting grandchildren’s LTPA, including lack of information, access to affordable and safe LTPA facilities/programs, transportation, money, and time. Conclusions. Latino grandparents are advocates for grandchildren’s LTPA and support grandchildren’s LTPA directly and indirectly. It may be promising to develop interventions to increase Latino grandparents’ competency in supporting grandchildren’s LTPA
Paternal grandmothers benefit the most from expressing affection to grandchildren: An extension of evolutionary and sociological research

- , 2019, DOI: 10.1177/0265407517734657
Abstract: This study explored how type of grandparent is related to grandparents’ affectionate communication and grandchildren’s relational closeness to grandparents. We predicted that grandchildren would be closest to and receive the most affection from maternal grandmothers, followed by maternal grandfathers, paternal grandmothers, and paternal grandfathers. We also hypothesized that type of grandparent would moderate the associations between affection and closeness. Using a convenience sample of grandchildren (n = 281), we found that grandchildren were closer to maternal grandparents rather than paternal grandparents. Grandchildren reported receiving more memories and humor from their paternal grandfathers rather than their maternal grandmothers. Type of grandparent moderated the associations between the love and esteem received from grandparents and closeness as well as the associations between the physical tokens of affection received from grandparents and closeness such that associations were amplified for paternal grandmothers. Findings are discussed in terms of their contributions to evolutionary and sociological research

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to provide a summary of the published research addressing the challenges and strengths of Latino grandparents raising grandchildren in the United States. Using the bioecological framework as a guide to organize and understand the published literature addressing Latino grandparent caregivers, we examined refereed articles published over the past 19 years. This framework provides a lens for understanding and situating research on Latino grandparents raising grandchildren to discover Latino grandparents’ strengths and challenges. The areas of foci include financial challenges, intergenerational relationships, reasons for caregiving, health status, language barriers, and culture. This article concludes with future research opportunities and a call to action for more research on Latino grandparents raising grandchildren

Abstract: Closeness and distance, intimacy and setting boundaries, harmony and conflict were inevitable in intimate social relations such as those in families. A considerable proportion of parents and adult children experience these mixed feelings. Researchers agreed that the feelings of ambivalence. However, the current knowledge about intergenerational ambivalence primarily came from the findings of Western studies, and there was lake of studies on whether the Western-derived concept of ambivalence could be applied to the traditional families like those in rural China. Furthermore, with profound social and economic transformations, China was facing to the urbanization and migration of population, resulting in the more and more dispersion of young grandchildren and older parent left behind in rural areas as a result of massive rural-urban migration. Grandparents became crucial caring resources in the rural families. This study investigated the effects of grandchild-caring provided by older parent on intergenerational ambivalence in rural China, where was a traditional society undergoing dramatic demographic, economic, and social changes. In former studies, many researchers had studied the effect of the grandchild-caring on the elders’ well-being, generally based on the role strain or role advantage. However, the conclusions still were confused. Different from the grandparenting in West, as a role of grandparenting, the grandparents were entitled to provide caring for their grandchildren, especially for the grandchildren of their sons. Although the grandparenting role might create a sense of fulfillment, as to the lack of other social resource, it was often long-term demanding, and may leave older parents with few options of exit, companying with a sense of ambivalence. Thus we employed the theory of role strain to explain the effects of grandchild-caring on intergenerational ambivalence of older parents in rural China. Using the data from the survey “Well-being of Elderly in Anhui Province, China” conducted in Chaohu area by the Institute for Population and Development Studies at XXX University, in conjunction with the University of Southern California and Syracuse University, we carried out the two-level Tobit models to examine the effects of grandchild-caring on ambivalent feelings reported by the older
Displaying and performing: Polish transnational families in Ireland Skyping grandparents in Poland

- , 2018, DOI: 10.1177/1461444817739272
Abstract: For transnational families, doing and displaying family is enabled by communications technologies like Skype. We draw on the concept of family display in an analysis of data from a qualitative study of Polish migrant parents resident in Ireland on their Skype use. Skype functions as an important tool for family display, in the perinatal period, and for displays of intergenerational solidarity. The communicative underpinnings of a video-Skype call are such that a significant element of performance is required in which parents, children and grandparents engage as performers, directors and audiences to create meaningful communication. Such communication is effortful, involves emotion work and belies assumptions about the ease of transnational family practice through Skype
Roles Changes and Life Strategies of Chinese Rural Migrant Grandparent Caregivers
- , 2018, DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3968/10538
Abstract: The phenomenon of rural migrant grandparent caregivers has increased dramatically over the past several decades. Grandparent caregivers often face multiple challenges in their caregiving roles. This study attempts to understand the Chinese rural migrant grandparenthood and their roles changes and life strategies. Using a qualitative approach, thirty-two grandparents participated in five focus group interviews. The findings reveal that main activities of Chinese rural migrant grandparent caregivers are raising grandchildren and doing housework, their roles in urban life are characterized by one-dimensional. Meanwhile, their role cluster in rural life including caring roles, social roles and productive roles dissolve gradually. To cope with changing roles in their new lives, grandparent caregivers used strategies such as maintaining independence, acquiring new knowledge and developing new interests, making new friends and building new circles. Most caregiving grandparents are vulnerable to a host of problems, including physical disability; psychological stress; insufficient knowledge; decreased income; social isolation. As society looks more to grandparent caregivers to assume parental responsibilities as a preference to babysitter or institutional care, systems including government, non-profit organizations, communities, universities and families should develop innovative, comprehensive, and evidence-based methods to enhance grandparent caregivers’ well-being.

Abstract: A recent increase in children living with grandparents places more children at increased risk for emotional, psychological, or behavioral problems. This study used the Resiliency Model of Family Stress, Adjustment, and Adaptation to examine how children’s living situation, parental monitoring, child’s resourcefulness, and perceived support affect depressive symptoms and perceived family functioning. Of participants, 36% (n = 56) lived with their parents only, 44% (n = 69) lived with a grandmother as their primary caregiver, and 20% (n = 31) lived in a multigenerational household. Results indicate parental monitoring and support affected perceptions of family functioning. Subjective support and resourcefulness affected depressive symptoms. No effects were found from living situation and demographic factors. Resourcefulness had the strongest effect on depressive symptoms, with a 3-point decrease in symptoms for each incremental increase in resourcefulness. This study provides insight into factors influencing children’s depressive symptoms and perceived family functioning, and provides direction for the development of future interventions
