Scientia Militaria : South African Journal of Military Studies , 2012, DOI: 10.5787/20-4-353
Abstract: Although the guns of the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town never fired a shot in anger, they often fired salutes in honour of Royalty (the King's Birthday), visiting heads of state and warships, Union Day (a salute of 19 guns in 1931) and on other appropriate occasions. The subject of this article is the Saluting Battery on Katzenellenbogen Bastion at the Castle which was operational from about 1910 until about 1942. In 1912 the Castle was the only authorized saluting station in the Union of South Africa. The battery was manned by personnel of the Royal Garrison Artillery until it was taken over by South Africa in 1921.

Health (Health) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/health.2016.811113
Abstract: Introduction: Children need intensive care in the first days after open-heart surgery. In some hospitals visits to Intensive Care Units (ICU), are not allowed, even by parents. Aim: The study aimed to illuminate the experiences of children and parents regarding permission or not to visit the ICU. Subjects and Methods: Twenty children aged between 8 and 15 years with planned open-heart surgery, together with their parents, were chosen consecutively to participate in the study. They were divided into two groups. Group 1, followed the routine with no visits by parents allowed to the ICU. Group 2 were allowed such visits. Data were collected through open interviews with parents and children, following an interview guide. Results “Missing” was the overall theme illustrated in the findings, with two major categories; “being seen” and “taking care” being developed. The parents trusted the expert knowledge of the medical staff but Missing was strongly expressed and influenced the feelings within the categories in Group 1. Parents felt they were not seen and the lack of information made them anxious, frightened and feel they were losing control over their parenthood. They asked to see their children only briefly to allay their fears. They knew their children’s needs and thought they could help by taking care of practical issues to improve their well-being. All children in this group felt sad and abandoned. The families in Group 2 felt happy and confident despite not being allowed to stay with children all the time. The parents felt included in their care, which had a positive effect on the children.

Abstract: “Locked twins” is a rare event occurring in about 1 in every 1000 twin births. A 21-year-old primigravida with a 31-week twin pregnancy was admitted for delivery. The head of the first twin was locked to the chin of the second twin at the top of the symphysis pubis. Caesarean section was performed allowing the delivery of both dead twins. Twins gestations with first twin in the breech presentation raise index of suspicion of potential locked twin. However, management of such situation is controversial with most authors and colleges recommending caesarean section to avoid interlocking heads. We report another rare case of interlocking heads and bring up the topic about management of breech-first twin deliveries.

Abstract: Lepidoptera stem borers cause significant damage in irrigated rice in Burkina Faso. This study was conducted to monitor the damage associated with these insect pests in an integrated cropping system over two consecutive years, 2020 and 2021. We used a randomized split-plot design in a latice design. Two rice varieties (FKR64 and Orylux6) were factors and four types of crop management before rice were used. Mineral fertilization (F0, F1, F2, F3) was distributed in secondary plots as the third factor. Weekly entomological assessments were conducted. Dead hearts and white heads were randomly sampled during the vegetative and the reproductive phases of the rice plant, respectively. Pre-immature populations of stem borers were recorded after laboratory dissection of rice tillers showing symptoms of damage. Chilo spp. was the most represented stem borer, irrespective of rice variety and type of treatment. Lepidoptera damage was higher in plots with higher NPK and legume than previous crops at 42 days after transplanting. The highest average rate of pre-immature stem borer populations was recorded on the Orylux6 variety. Parasitoids associated with stem borers belonged to four families of the order Hymenoptera. The highest yields were recorded in plots with the FKR 64 * F1 combination.

The Warship Schleswig-Holstein: History, Cultural Value and Legal Status
Maili Roio
Journal of Ethnology and Folkloristics , 2009,
Abstract: The current paper looks into the issues connected with underwater cultural heritage in Estonia and deals with its legal and physical protection. The report discusses the topic of what we actually mean by underwater heritage, what are the threats in terms of preservation and what are the possibilities to protect underwater heritage in Estonia. The paper analyses objects that are not defined by the UNESCO convention from 2001 as underwater cultural heritage, but which form a considerable part of underwater objects in Estonia that are protected by the state. A wide range of challenges – protection, ownership, value – is illustrated by the study of the history and present state of the battleship Schleswig-Holstein.
