The Saluting Battery at the Castle of Good Hope Cape Town 1910-1942

Abstract: Although the guns of the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town never fired a shot in anger, they often fired salutes in honour of Royalty (the King's Birthday), visiting heads of state and warships, Union Day (a salute of 19 guns in 1931) and on other appropriate occasions. The subject of this article is the Saluting Battery on Katzenellenbogen Bastion at the Castle which was operational from about 1910 until about 1942. In 1912 the Castle was the only authorized saluting station in the Union of South Africa. The battery was manned by personnel of the Royal Garrison Artillery until it was taken over by South Africa in 1921.

Abstract: 宾阳关公诞已有180多年的历史，是南宁市非物质文化遗产名录项目，具有较好的传统文化与民族地域特色，但存在民俗旅游规划不清晰、文创项目极度缺乏、传播推广力度不够等主要问题。结合体验经济、民俗旅游和当地实际，提出打造关公民俗文化旅游路线、建设关公民俗文化旅游园、创新民俗体验项目、强化宣传推广等策略来开发提升关公诞，从而助推南宁市文化和旅游业高质量发展。
Binyang Guan Gong’s birthday has a history of more than 180 years, and it is an intangible cultural heritage list item in Nanning. It has good traditional culture and ethnic regional characteristics, but there are some main problems such as unclear folk tourism planning, extreme lack of cultural and creative projects, and insufficient dissemination and promotion. Combining the experience economy, folk tourism and local reality, this paper puts forward some strategies to develop and promote Guan Gong’s birthday, such as building Guan Gong’s folk culture tourism route, building Guan Gong’s folk culture tourism park, innovating folk experience projects and strengthening publicity and promotion, so as to promote the high-quality development of Nanning’s culture and tourism industry.
On the Number of Edges for Chessboard Graphs in Higher Dimensions  [PDF]

Abstract: In this paper, we consider chessboard graphs in higher dimensions and the number of edges of their corresponding graphs. First, we solve for the number of edges for some of the chessboard graphs of 3 dimensions. Then, we obtain results for the number of edges for higher dimensional chessboard graphs with all dimensions sizes being the same. For the higher dimensional queen’s graph, a double series solution for the number of edges was found - given both the dimension size and the number of dimensions. This solution didn’t reduce readily to a closed form solution. For the higher dimensional bishop’s graph, a series solution was found that involves the generalized Harmonic number. This solution series also didn’t readily reduce to a closed form solution. Results for the number of edges for two types of higher dimensional knights’ graphs were also found. Finally, a series solution for the number of edges for the higher dimensional king’s graph was found as well. To reduce this series solution to a closed form solution, the Wolfram Alpha series calculator was utilized.
Consuming children and making mothers: birthday parties, gifts and the pursuit of sameness

Abstract: children's birthday parties, and related consumption, form an integral part of the social process of mothering in contemporary consumer culture. from the choosing of the 'right' present to the arrangement of the 'appropriate' party theme, an enormous pressure is exerted upon mothers to maintain social equilibrium through the circulation of their children and gifts amongst and across households. ethnographic research in britain suggests that the economic growth of children's party provision and services is coupled with a popular discourse that laments the loss of 'authentic' kinship-based birthday parties and home-made provisioning. in contrast to this spoken discourse, this article reveals how women in fact avidly embrace market goods and services; as a means of generating a culture of sameness that avoids the risks (to the motherhood as a collective, localised phenomenon) of exceptional or overtly accomplished mothering. commercialised, mass produced goods and birthday services are used as a means of limiting expressive gift relations and hospitality. in this sense, the search for sameness, through the cultural practice of making children's parties, is at once liberating and potentially oppressive in its strive for the normative and its inadvertent exclusion of 'other' care-givers. furthermore, children and their related material culture are consumed, through the birthday party circuit, as a means of generating specific types of mothering.

Abstract:

Mean King’s problem is formulated as a retrodiction problem among noncommutative observables. In this paper, we reformulate Mean King’s problem using Shannon’s entropy as a first step of introducing quantum uncertainty relation with delayed classical information. As a result, we give informational and statistical meanings to the estimation on Mean King problem. As its application, we give an alternative proof of nonexistence of solutions of Mean King’s problem for qubit system without using entanglement.

Abstract: The primary function of the State President's Unit is to protect the head of state - not his person as is generally believed, but his authority over the state. Ironically, the ceremonial performances of the State President's Unit lead people to believe that they are only capable of doing drill exercises. However, upon investigating the training they receive during National Service, one soon changes one's opinion. The sentries are trained as soldiers who can protect their country against attacks from the outside, as well as against internal unrest. The ceremonial function is also of great importance and a high standard of training for the Unit, as home guard and as guard of honour, is maintained.
