Abstract: this study evaluated the environmental conditions of the curva s？o paulo bathing place, located in poti river, at teresina city, piauí, brazil. a monitoring program of water quality was carried out between june 2009 to october 2010, through the faecal coliform, turbidity, ph, and temperature. the results indicated that the place presented a satisfactory condition for bathing in 90% of the monitored period. this favorable scenario is due to the low level of urban occupation at the upstream of the resort. restrictions on recreational use occur during the rainy season (december-may), which was attributed to diffuse pollution. in order to provide greater health security to the swimmers and encourage recreation in the study area, it is proposed to the establishment a monitoring program of balneability.

Abstract: The study assessed changes in rainfall variability and the frequency of extreme events (very wet and very dry) in the state of S?o Paulo, Brazil, for a 40-year period that divided into two sub-groups: 1973-1992 (P1) and 1993-2012 (P2). Data of 79 rain gauge stations were selected to represent the different climatic and geomorphological domains of the state. The annual pattern was evaluated through the scale and the shape parameters of the gamma distribution and the 95th and the 5th percentiles thresholds, the latter also employed to evaluate the seasonal spatial patterns (rainy season, Oct.-Mar. and sub-humid to dry season, Apr.-Sep.). Results showed that the average precipitation was similar in P1 and P2, but S?o Paulo evolved to a pattern of increased irregularity in the rainfall distribution, with a rise of approximately 10% in the number of extremes between 1973 and 2012, especially in the very dry occurrences, and in the north and west of the state, which are the least rainy regions. Moreover, while 55% of the evaluated rain gauges recorded more extreme wet episodes in P2, 76% registered more dry extreme episodes in the same period. Some very dry or very wet events recorded after the 40-year period evaluated were discussed in terms of the associated weather patterns and their impacts on society and attested to the validity of the results found in the quantitative assessment. The qualitative analysis indicates that if the trends of more irregular distribution of rain and increase in extreme events persist, as pointed out by the gamma and percentile analyses, they would continue to bring serious effects on the natural and social systems in the state, which is the most populous and has the strongest and most diversified economy in Brazil.

Abstract: Foi proposto um modelo para o processo de gresifica o de massas ceramicas de grés porcelanico, baseado na correla o entre a porosidade e os componentes da massa e sua evolu o com a temperatura. A aplica o do modelo foi realizada empregando uma frita especialmente desenvolvida como fundente e uma composi o otimizada de argila e caulim. Assim, desenvolveu-se uma massa de grés porcelanico de baixa temperatura de queima (~1150 masculineC) e uma faixa de estabilidade dimensional de aproximadamente 100 masculineC.

(leguminosae, papilionoideae) in the state of s？o paulo, brazil). in an inventory for the state of s？o paulo, accomplished with herbaria material and plants collected in the field, there were found nine species of indigofera l.: i. asperifolia bong. ex benth., i. bongardiana (kuntze) burk. var. bongardiana, i. guaranitica hassl., i. hirsuta l., i. lespedezioides kunth, i. spicata forssk., i. suffruticosa mill. subsp. suffruticosa, i. trita subsp. scabra (roth) de kort & thijsse and i. truxillensis kunth. four of these species are cited for the first time for the state and two, i. spicata and i. trita subsp. scabra, are cited for the first time for brazil. descriptions and illustrations for the species as well as a key for identification of these taxa are presented.

Abstract: filling a significant gap in our (brazilian) scientific production about prisons and detention societies, at the interface of disciplinary knowledges, fernando salla's prisons in s？o paulo - 1822-1940 is, besides a socio-historical work on punishment within the state's context (nevertheless valid for the whole country, given s？o paulo's then already outstanding position in the national scene), the report of a thorough research effort and a detailed presentation of data and analyses. it shows the permanent socio-legal-punitive wound (and its permanence) in our reality, expressed in the distance between discourse and practice, in the unequal treatment of social levels and categories, in the conflict between legal and medical knowledges as well as between them and management practices, and in the confrontation between the demands by the political field and the claims of the scientific one.
