Business and Management Review , 2011,
Abstract: Organizational cynicism and burn-out are two intertwined phenomena which constitute an important subject matter in organizational behavior literature. A through literature review suggests that there are a few studies regarding the relationship between organizational cynicism and burn-out syndrome. The main purpose of this paper is thus to find out whether there is a relationship between organizational cynicism and burn-out syndrome, and if so, to determine the course of this relationship. To fulfill this purpose, we studied a private hospital employing 175 people and operating in the capital of Turkey, Ankara. The mainhypothesis of the study -that “there is a significant relationship between organizational cynicism and burnout”- seems valid from the results obtained. Furthermore it has been concluded that there is a significant relationship between cognitive cynicism and behavioral cynicism, but there is no significant relationship between cognitive cynicism and burnout.

This article provides an in-depth analysis of the concept of Cynicism, focusing on its essential attributes, connotative values, and behavioral characteristics. It discusses the essence of Cynicism, elaborates on the intrinsic values of Cynicism including emphasis on simple living, moral concepts, freedom and inner peace, criticism of hypocrisy, and the perception of Cynics as challengers to authority and social norms. Furthermore, it explores the behavioral characteristics of Cynicism such as indifference and composure, pessimism, self-isolation, decadence and social criticism, and challenging authority. Through analyzing these aspects, it reveals the core ideas of Cynical philosophy, as well as the attitudes and behavioral traits of Cynics, providing a comprehensive understanding of Cynicism.

Open Journal of Depression (OJD) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojd.2014.34020
Abstract: Employees face an increasing number of stressors that can originate from the actual performance of their duties, from the relationships with fellow workers and supervisors, and from organizational structures and expectations which accumulated over time results on burnout which contains the factor of depersonalization/cynicism. This conceptual paper focuses on an insidious pattern of behavior that evolves from chronic stress in the workplace into a pattern of ongoing behavior that increases worker alienation from others and perpetuates itself through self-confirming perceptions and actions. We argue that depersonalization/cynicism needs to be addressed at the organizational and individual level.

Creative Education (CE) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2013.49084
Abstract:

This research aims to examine teachers’ general cynicism inclinations in respect to some variables and life satisfaction level and the relevance of these inclinations with gender, relationship status and membership of a union. Research is carried out using relational inquiry module and the study group of it constituted of 395 primary school teachers who are working in Ankara during academic year of 2012-2013 and selected with the help of modeling of inordinate set. The data are collected with “The Scale of Life Satisfaction” and tested by making use of multiple regression technique. Whether the differentiation levels of teachers’ general cynicism inclinations are related with their genders, relationship status and their membership of a union are analyzed using T test. As a result, male teachers have higher degree of cynicism in cognitive dimension than female teachers. Moreover, these general cynicism inclinations in cognitive, affective and behavioral dimensions do not differ greatly according to teachers’ membership of a union and relationship status. It is observed that the cognitive and affective dimensions of general cynicism inclinations have negative-sided relation with teachers’ life satisfaction rates.

- , 2017,
Abstract: The purpose of this research is to contribute to the solution of problems by determining the organizational cynicism levels of the personnel working in sports facilities which are part of the service sector in the globalizing world. The study was carried out for the purpose of determining organizational cynicism levels of employees in sports facilities and revealing differences between levels of organizational cynicism according to employee demographics. The study group consisted of 279 personnel working in private sports facilities in Istanbul province. Our study was carried out in the summer of 2016. A questionnaire consisting of socio-demographic data and a scale consisting of 3 sub-dimensions and 14 items adapted to Turkish by Arslan (2012) developed by Brandes (1997) for organizational cynicism was used. The scale was implemented previously by M?s?rdal? Yangil, Ba? and Aygün (2014) on the personnel who worked in starred hotels and a 14-item draft form was applied to measure the levels of organizational cynicism. Because the sample feature changed in our study, the scale was viewed with the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) for the representation of the new sample group. In our study, age from the demographic variables was affecting affective and behavioral cynicism and seen the highest in the 20-24 age range. The cynicism levels of those who the employees who are married are lower than the cynicism levels of the single ones. Moreover, it was determined that the levels of behavioral and affective cynicism were lower in the employees without administrative duties, whereas there was no significant difference in the cognitive dimension. Despite the limitations of the research, it is expected that other studies will shed light on the determination of organizational cynicism levels in the sports field

- , 2018,
Abstract: This study aims to identify the level of work-family conflict, life satisfactions and organizational cynicism of the families who are working in the tourism industry and to reveal the causal relationships between these phenomenon. According to the results of field work conducted in 2015 within the scope of this research with 427 employees from five star hotels operating in Antalya, the work-family conflict of the employees is moderate. While moderate results are achieved in the point of life satisfaction, it is determined that the organizational cynicism is relatively low. Hierarchical Regression Analysis was made in order to test the hypotheses which are established within the scope of this study’s purpose and theoretical framework. It is determined that work-family conflict is a predictor variable on the life satisfaction and cynicism. Another result reached through the study is that life satisfaction acts as a partial mediator between work-family conflict and organizational cynicism. Accordingly, it is seen that organizational cynicism which is caused by work-family conflict arises from its impacts on life satisfaction

Bolanle Ogungbamila
Psychological Thought , 2013, DOI: 10.5964/psyct.v6i1.47
Abstract: Studies on occupational burnout among health workers, especially in Nigeria have been at best isolated. No adequate inter-occupationalcomparative study on burnout among health workers, police personnel, and teachers has been conducted. This study, therefore, investigatedthe extent to which health workers were different from police personnel, and teachers in the manifestations of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, reduced personal accomplishment, and overall occupational burnout. Participants were 455 employees (203 males; 252females) sampled from 3 service occupations (police = 139; health = 159; teaching = 157), whose ages averaged 35.94 years (SD = 7.93).Health workers reported higher levels of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and overall occupational burnout than either police personnelor teachers. Although health workers reported a higher level of reduced personal accomplishment than police personnel, results indicatedthat teachers felt as underachieving as health workers. The findings were discussed in terms of the perceived imbalance in the jobdemands-rewards ratio in the job situations.

Psychology (PSYCH) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2015.63023
Abstract: Environmental problem is one of the biggest problems that threatens human life. Human behavior has long been known to play an important role in maintaining and improving environmental sustainability. Psychological studies investigating predictors of pro-environmental behavior have been carried out, but no studies link it with cynicism and self-efficacy simultaneously. This study design was predictive correlational and data analysis technique employed was multiple linear regression analysis. Participants of this study were 205 undergraduate students in Jakarta (132 males, 73 females; Mage = 19.68 years old; SDage = 0.849 years) taken using convenience sampling technique. This study found that cynicism and environmental self-efficacy are able to predict proenvironmental behavior in positive directions. This study suggests revising the measurement instrument of cynicism.
