Advances in Aerospace Science and Technology (AAST) , 2025, DOI: 10.4236/aast.2025.103007
Abstract: Big Data Analytics (BDA) is transforming industries worldwide, including the airline sector, by enabling data-driven decision making that improves operational efficiency and profitability. This research focuses on the application of BDA in Biman Bangladesh Airlines, a key player in Southeast Asia’s aviation market where adoption of such technologies is still emerging. Revenue management systems, crucial for airline profitability, benefit significantly from big data insights that influence fleet planning, fare structuring, and operational management. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were gathered from airline professionals and managers across Bangladesh, complemented by detailed case studies of Biman Bangladesh Airlines. The study examines how Biman leverages BDA to enhance flight punctuality, optimize passenger and cargo load factors, improve fuel efficiency, and increase customer satisfaction. Results demonstrate that effective use of big data analytics enables better decision-making, helping airlines respond flexibly to operational challenges and market demands. Despite these advantages, the research also highlights challenges related to building analytics capabilities and managing complex data environments in the airline industry. Overall, this study contributes to a better understanding of how airlines in developing markets can harness BDA strategically to boost revenue, improve competitiveness, and support sustainable growth.
Effects of advanced purchase on tickets price variation: the case of the S o Paulo metropolitan area [paper in Portuguese]
Marcus Vinícius Nascimento
Journal of Transport Literature , 2012,
Abstract: This paper focuses on evaluate whether there are variations in the practice of discount in advanced airline fare purchase in regional and airlift flights and flights between the high and low season. With the aid of an econometric model and a data collection over a period of three years (2008, 2009 and 2010) of flights with origin from Guarulhos and Congonhas airports, it was observed that the advance purchase for airlift flights reflected in average discount of 37%, while for regional flights the discount of 24.3% is observed. . In relation with low season, the high season flights have larger discounts just after purchase with 45 days from the flight date. The main explanation for the results can be grounded in segmentation between passengers who travel for business and leisure.

Journal of Transportation Technologies (JTTs) , 2022, DOI: 10.4236/jtts.2022.123022
Abstract: Sustainability was investigated in the ability to reliably anticipate airline market share, which is critical for effective business strategy. As a result, a model was created to address the issue of airline market share across all Nigerian airport routes. The model took into account the explanatory variables average fares paid by various airlines passengers, number of competitors at each route, frequency of flight, and the total number of enplaned passengers. The model illustrated how it may be used to determine an airline’s sustainability. It was observed that all of the parameters in the model were statistically significant and exhibited the predicted signs. As a result, the market share of Nigerian airlines can assess the sustainability of Nigerian airlines. As a result, it is proposed that the federal government and aviation regulatory bodies provide a level playing field to all commercial airline operators, without any kind of protectionism. Airlines’ services should be completely deregulated, and the forces of perfect market competition should drive the airline’s overall health. The government should provide a fair and supportive climate for airline operators as soon as possible. The ease of doing airline business must be implemented honestly and competitively. The degree of competition has a detrimental impact on the airline’s market share, especially if the airline operates in a regulated market. As a result, perfect competition for the airline should be promoted.

Journal of Service Science and Management (JSSM) , 2022, DOI: 10.4236/jssm.2022.154025
Abstract: Airline service quality is an important criterion for determining the service level of airlines. Reference was made in this segment based on two-factor theory. The optimal scale analysis method was used to identify the association characteristics between all domestic and international airline complaints and the time factor, followed by the construction of an airline service quality measurement (ASQM) model based on the Civil Aviation Passenger Service Evaluation (CAPSE) index. The ASQM model was used to measure the service quality of 26 full-service airlines and six low-cost service airlines in China. The study found that: the time distribution of airline complaints is uneven, but shows a relative concentration of annual, seasonal, quarterly and monthly, with the peak of complaints in August each year; there is a high correlation between all airline complaint type variables and time variables, but there are differences in the focus of complaints at different times: summer and autumn not only have a high volume of airline complaints, but also have complex complaint types. The quality of all services provided by China’s full-service airlines is better than that of low-cost service airlines. In general, the quality of service of “in-flight service and ground service” was more stable, while the quality of service of “ticketing service” decreased significantly. The service quality of “flight service” is difficult to maintain. This paper proposes an objective analysis method to evaluate airline service quality by using airline complaint statistics, and provides solutions and suggestions for airlines to improve their overall service quality.
Development Journalism in Bangladesh: The Case of BDP 2100  [PDF]
Sarkar Barbaq Quarmal, S. M. Humayun Kabir
Advances in Journalism and Communication (AJC) , 2025, DOI: 10.4236/ajc.2025.132002
Abstract: The role of mass media in national development is well-established around the globe, and Bangladesh is no exception to that. Mass media not only provide information, but also play a catalytic role in shaping public opinion by providing a discursive space. In Bangladesh, development journalism has a long history, but has been criticized for “dehumanizing” development issues. The paper aims to understand this phenomenon by analyzing the coverage of Bangladesh’s largest long-term development project, Bangladesh Delta Plan 2100 (BDP 2100), in five leading Bangladeshi dailies from 2018 to 2022. Employing content analysis as the research method, the study found that coverage of BDP 2100 was “minimal” and centered mostly on event-based reporting. The stories were treated with “low” emphasis in terms of space given and with “low” prominence. There were only a handful of investigative reports; more importantly, the stories did not focus much on the humanitarian aspects. Rather, those focused more on funding, economic impacts, challenges in implementation of the project, corruption, etc. Political elites (especially people in the government), high government officials, and foreign delegates were mostly featured, which resonates with the arguments that media coverage is elite-centered, favors the elites, and serves their interests while undermining the issues of the ordinary people.

Abstract: This study aims to determine how the airline companies perceive the competition environment they are in, which competitive strategies they implement and to find out how and by which factors they are affected while forming these strategies. Qualitative research method was used in the study. The population of the study consists of the airline companies which have mainly local capital, the management centres of which are in Turkey and which have the licence of scheduled and non-scheduled domestic and international flights. A descriptive analysis was made for the data. The result of the study reveals that the competitive strategies implemented especially focus on obtaining the cost leadership. In addition, costs, customer satisfaction and service quality, employees, innovation and technological changes appear to be the most important elements among the factors which affect the competitive strategies.
Some Comments on the Recent Study “Tracing the woes: An Empirical Analysis of the Airline Industry”
Wellington Costa
Revista de Literatura dos Transportes , 2009,
Abstract: This study aims to review the current situation of the airline industry in the United Stated from the analysis of the recent paper “Tracing the woes: An Empirical Analysis of the Airline Industry”, developed by Steven Berry and Panle Jia (2008). The authors discuss the turmoil in the industry in the early 2000's, denoted by four major bankruptcy, two mergers and all legacy carriers reporting profit reduction. The study estimates the impact of demand and supply evolution on profitability using a structural model of the US airline industry. As a result, they found that air travel demand has become more price-sensitive and passengers have now a strong preference for nonstop flights. At the end the results showed significant changes of marginal cost benefited from the nonstop flights.[Paper in Portuguese]
THE MEASUREMENT OF SERVICE QUALITY WITH SERVQUAL FOR DIFFERENT DOMESTIC AIRLINE FIRMS IN TURKEY
Kenan Aydin,Seda Yildirim
Serbian Journal of Management , 2012,
Abstract: The primary purpose of this research is to determine whether there is a significant differencebetween the passengers’ service quality expectations and service quality perceptions in differentairline firms. The collateral purpose is to find out whether there is a significant difference betweenservice quality expectation and service quality perception of the passengers who have differentsocio-demographic characteristics. To achieve these purposes, the 5 - dimensional scale, suggestedby Parasuraman et.al (1988) was applied to the airline travel sector. The questionnaire was used ininterviewing the passengers at Sabiha G k en Airport in Istanbul in Turkey with a “face to face”method. The data was analysed in SPSS 16 program after questionnnaires were collected. Firstly, thedemographic characteristics of passengers were presented for different airline firms. Then the highestand the lowest gaps for the each statement was determined. Lastly it was compared if there was asignificant difference between the service quality expectation and perception for different domesticairline firms.
Analysis of the Effects of Airline Mergers [paper in Portuguese]
Sidneia Rocha de Sousa
Journal of Transport Literature , 2011,
Abstract: The objective of this paper is to perform a review of the study “Analyzing the Effects of a Merger between Airline Codeshare Partners” (Brown and Gayle, 2009). The study indicates that the potential impacts caused by the merger of two major airlines in the US market - Delta and Northwest Airlines - are not harmful for the competition. The coalition may have several effects for different types of products (pure on-line itinerary versus codeshare itinerary, either traditional or virtual). The results found by the authors through the analysis of pre-merger data and structural econométric models indicate that the percentile increase in prices forecasted for codeshare products are larger than the percentile increases for pure on-line itinerary.
