LA IMAGEN Y LOS ECOS DEL LINGUISTA PROFESIONAL: LA CORRESPONDENCIA DE RODOLFO LENZ

this study proposes to document the wide range of interests found in the correspondence of the great german linguist in chile, rodolfo lenz (1863-1939), with special attention to three areas: 1) his correspondents with academic affiliations and scholarly organizations in the united states; 2) his participation in the international phonetic association; and 3) his dialogues with amado alonso and aurelio espinosa, two major figures in the field of spanish-american dialectology. at the end of the study is found the text of espinosa’s four letters to lenz. the study of lenz’ letters documents, not only the professionalization of the linguist of his time, but also the development of the field in a broader sense.
