%X this study proposes to document the wide range of interests found in the correspondence of the great german linguist in chile, rodolfo lenz (1863-1939), with special attention to three areas: 1) his correspondents with academic affiliations and scholarly organizations in the united states; 2) his participation in the international phonetic association; and 3) his dialogues with amado alonso and aurelio espinosa, two major figures in the field of spanish-american dialectology. at the end of the study is found the text of espinosa¡¯s four letters to lenz. the study of lenz¡¯ letters documents, not only the professionalization of the linguist of his time, but also the development of the field in a broader sense.
