Abstract: this paper reports data from a study carried out on a portuguese coin, the real branco from d. jo?o i, found in the archaeological site of the roman villa of s?o pedro, in fronteira (alentejo, portugal). characterization of the corrosion products, surface morphology and elemental composition of the coin was performed using non-destructive techniques, namely, optical microscopy (om), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (sem-eds) and powder x-ray diffraction spectroscopy (xrd). the obtained results were consistent with the historical data.
