REGISTROS ANDINOS AL MARGEN DE LA ESCRITURA: EL ARTE RUPESTRE COLONIALDOI: 10.4067/S0718-68942009000100002 Keywords: rock art, andean communities, colonial times. Abstract: thepaperproposes that rock art was a system used for recording and communicating in the andes that continued in use, with some adaptations and changes, duríng the colonialperiod. it attempts to demonstrate that, except ín special cases, rock art was not perceived by the spaniards as an active system that enabled the expressíon and círculatíon of ímages, meaníng and thoughts. it was the absence of a colonial-and therefore repressive-perspective that enabled the very system imposed by the spanishfor those aims, to operate outside ofthe traditional european systems, especially written ones.
