%X thepaperproposes that rock art was a system used for recording and communicating in the andes that continued in use, with some adaptations and changes, dur¨ªng the colonialperiod. it attempts to demonstrate that, except ¨ªn special cases, rock art was not perceived by the spaniards as an active system that enabled the express¨ªon and c¨ªrculat¨ªon of ¨ªmages, mean¨ªng and thoughts. it was the absence of a colonial-and therefore repressive-perspective that enabled the very system imposed by the spanishfor those aims, to operate outside ofthe traditional european systems, especially written ones.
