？Illa (Cause) of Interest In Islamic Law

By taking reference the words and the deeds of the prophet Mu？ammad, the Islamic lawyers and the academicians tried to determine the circumstances under which interest occurs, in other words, they tried to define what is the ？illa (cause) of interest. Moving from gold and silver mentioned in the ？adīth, ？illa of interest has the characteristics of “being weighed with a kind” according to the ？anafīs and ？anbalīs, “having the characteristics of money as the dominant element” according to the Shāfi？īs and Mālikīs, and “being characterized as only money” according to some jurists. Moving from wheat, barley, palm and salt mentioned in the ？adīth mentioned in the ？adīth, ？illa of interest has the characteristics of” “being weighed with a kind” according to the ？anafīs and ？anbalīs, “being food” according to the Shāfi？īs and “being food that can be stocked” according to the Mālikīs.
