The relationship between depression and mentality in adolescents

Aim: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between depression and self-esteem in adolescents. Method: This research was carried out in descriptive and relational search design. The population of the study was 459 high school students studying in a district of the Ege Region during the 2013-2014 academic year. The Personal Information Form developed by the researchers and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDE) and the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (CSBSE) were used to collect the data. In evaluating the data; percentages, averages, Pearson correlation analysis were used. Findings: The mean scores of Beck Depression Inventory total scores of students were found to be 13.35 ± 10.16 and Coopersmith Self Esteem Inventory scores were found to be 35.98 ± 7.99. In the study, there was a statistically significant negative correlation between Beck Depression Inventory total score average and Coopersmith Self Esteem Inventory total score (p <0.01). Conclusions: As a result of the study, it was determined that the students had low self-esteem and no tendency to depression. Depression levels of students were found to be related to self esteem
