Abstract:

This issue introduces seven new books that make important contributions to the literature of cinema. Perdeyi Aralamak (2018) and Se?il’in Sinema Kitab? (2018), edited by S. Ruken ?ztürk and Hasan Akbulut, comprise the review articles written by students, friends, and colleagues for Se?il Büker, a pioneering female academician in the field. In Tun? Y?ld?r?m’s book, Sinemac? ve Tarih?i Metin Erksan: Dokuz Da??n Efesi’nde Sosyal E?k?yal?k Meselesi (2018), the Erksan film mentioned in its title is dealt with from the perspective of cultural history. It analyzes the kind of bandit presented in the film while illustrating how social history reading may be done. In another history of cinema, this one entitled Milli Sinema Osmanl?’da Sinema Hayat? ve Yerli üretime Ge?i? (2017), ?. Arda Odaba?? discusses Ottoman cinema life in the years 1917-18 along with some of the first fictional films, offering an inquiry at the micro-historical level. Nezih Erdo?an in Sineman?n ?stanbul’da ?lk Y?llar?: Modernlik ve Seyir Maceralar? (2017) brings to light the first days of cinema in Istanbul. Ali Karado?an, in Modernist Estetik: Türkiye’de Sanat Sinemas? Tarihine Giri? (1896-2000) fills an important gap in the discourse about Turkish art cinema by examining the transformation of art films during periods with distinguishing historical characteristics. Bülent Diken, Graeme Gilloch and Craig Hammond, in their book Nuri Bilge Ceylan Sinemas?: Türkiyeli Bir Sinemac?n?n Küresel Hayal Gücü (2018), bring this director’s work to the agenda of sociological and critical thinking, establishing a debate-based dialogue concerning five persistent themes in his films
