A medical debate about defensive-qi and nutritive-qi was held in the Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Shanghai Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine sixty years ago. Although the contention made some progresses in the understanding of defensive-qi and nutritive-qi, due to historical reasons, it also brought some significant negative effects. Reflecting on the historical experience and lessons brought by this contention will have important historical and practical significance for re-understanding the defensive-qi and nutritive-qi theory and the later medical contention
