Controversies of statins for chronic kidney disease complicated with cardiovascular disease

Several large clinical trials revealed that statins might reduce all-cause mortality and cardiovascular events in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Some preliminary studies also suggested that they could reduce the incidence of contrast-induced nephropathy and the rate of kidney function loss. However, the results concerning the efficacy and safety of statins therapy in patients with CKD, especially in those undergoing renal replacement therapy, are still controversial. The reasons are complicated. This paper tries to discuss the controversies about statins for CKD complicated with cardiovascular disease
