Abstract:
cigarettesmokingiscommoninsocietiesworldwideandhasbeenidentifiedasinjurioustohumanhealth.nicotineisthemostabundantcomponentinthecigarettesmoke.itisfirstmetabolizedintheliver.thenaturaldietcontainsavarietyofcompounds,suchasdatepalm(phoenixdactyliferal.).itexhibitsprotectiveeffectagainstdifferenttoxins.theaimsofpresentstudyweretoinvestigatethedamagingeffectsofnicotineontheliverandthepreventiveroleofdatepalmagainstsuchdamage.datepalmpitpowderwasusedtostudyitsprotectiveeffectonnicotineinducedhepatotoxicity.threegroupsofadultmalealbinomicewereused,eachcontainingeightanimals.groupaservedasacontrol;groupbwasusedasanexperimentalgrouptreatedwithnicotine(0.3mg/kg)intraperitoneallyforforty-fivedays;groupcreceivednicotine(0.3mg/kg)intraperitoneallyalongwithdatepalmpitpowder(500mg/kg)orallyforforty-fivedays.histopathologicalexaminationrevealedthatthegeneralarchitecturewasdamagedwithincreaseinsizeofhepatocytes,centralveinandnumberoffatvacuolesandperiportalinfiltrationoflymphocytes.thenicotinetreatedmiceshoweddecreasedlevelofcytoplasmicvacuolization,necrosisandinflammation.datepalmpitpowderadministrationtonicotine-treatedmiceshowedreversionofthedamagedfeaturetonearlynormal.theseresultsalongwithpreviousstudysuggestthatdatepalmpitpowderisusefulincombatingnicotineinducedhepatotoxicity.
