Abstract:
?powderriverbasin(prb)coal,whichaccountsforover40%ofthecoalconsumedforpowergenerationintheunitedstates,wasinvestigatedforpreparationofcoalwaterslurry(cws).thestaticstabilityandrheologyofthecwswerecharacterizedasafunctionofloading.thecoalloadingwasvariedfrom30%to50%andbothionic(sodiumpolystyrenesulphonate(pss))andnonionic(tritonx-100)surfactantswereemployedasadditives.theadditionofpsstoprbslurrieswasfoundtoyieldpoorstaticstability.ontheotherhand,tritonx-100wasfoundtobeaneffectivesurfactant,reducingthesedimentationbymorethan50%comparedtotheonewithoutsurfactantin45%cws.addingtritonx-100reducestheviscosityofthecwsforcoalloadingsof30%and40%.althoughtheviscositiesforcoalloadingof42.5%and45%arehigherwhentritonx-100isadded,thestaticstabilityissignificantlybetterthanforsampleswithoutsurfactant.thehighestcoalloadingforprbslurrywithacceptableviscosityforpumpingis42.5%.
