Abstract:

Processesaccompaniedthebreakupofcontinents,spreadingofoceanfloorandcontinent-oceantransi-tioncouldtriggerlargescalemeltingofthemantlebeneaththecontinentaswellastheocean,andpro-ducemaficmagmaswithdistinctgeochemicalcharac-teristics.Suchrocksprovideusanimportantrecordforunravelingthenatureandthetimeofdeeptectonicandmagmaticprocessesduringthetectonicevolutionoflarge-scaleorogenicbelts,suchastheHimalayanorogenicbelt.AsanintegratedpartoftheHimalaya,theTethyanHimalayaconsistsofwell-developedearlyPaleozoictoCenozoicsedimentsandisnotedforde-velopmentofspectacularsemi-continuous,thousandkilometerslonggneiss(orgranitic)domes.Ithaspre-servedcriticalrecordstoaddressthenatureofdefor-mation,magmatism,andmetamorphismassociatedwiththeopening,spreading,anddemiseoftheNeo-TethyanOceanandthefinalcontinentalcollisionbetweentheIndianandtheEurasianPlateattheearlyCenozoictime.Inaddition,italsocouldbeatype-exampletoaddressanumberoffirst-orderissueswithregardtothetectonicdynamicsofpassiveconti-nentalmarginduringtheWilson-cycle.
