Abstract:

High-performancebismaleimdes(BMI)matrixcompositesreinforcedbygraphitefiberswerepreparedandtoughenedwithathermoplasticcomponent(PAEK)byusingtheEx-situconcept.Experimentalmatrixwasdesignedforoveralltougheningofthebaseresin,periodicallyinterleavingthermoplasticfilmsintoeachplies(Ex-situconcept)andforvaryingthefilmcompositions.Thehighestimpactdamageresistancecharacterizedbycompressionafterimpact(CAI)wasobtainedforthelaminatestoughenedontheEx-situconcept,especially,whentwo-componentcastfilmsofaspecialrationofPAEK/BMI6040wereinterleavedthoughthethermoplasticconcentrationfortheoveralltoughening,interleavingthepurethermoplasticfilmsandthetwo-componentfilmswascomparable.ThereweretwopeaksfoundintheDSCtraceofthelaminatestoughenedimplyingaphaseseparationprocessoccurred.Theglasstransitiontemperatureofthelaminatestoughenedwasslightlyreducedduetothelow-temperaturePAEK.Morphologicalstudyrevealedatypicalgranularstructurejustintheinterplayregionasaresultofspinodaldecompositionandcoarseningprocess.ThiswasinagreementoftheresultofDSCinvestigation.
