Abstract:

Recentstudiesonhydrogencombustionwerereviewedbriefly.Thelaminarflowandcombustionofpremixedhydrogen/airmixtureinacylindricalchannelofamonolithreactorwithandwithoutcatalyticwallwasnumericallymodeledbysolvingtwo-dimensional(2-D)NavierStokes(NS)equations,energyequation,andspeciesequations.Eightgasspeciesandtwentyreversiblegasreactionswereconsidered.ThecontrolvolumetechniqueandtheSIMPLEalgorithmwereusedtosolvethepartialdifferentialequations.Thestreamlinesoftheflowfield,temperaturecontours,theentrancelength,andtheconcentrationfieldswerecomputed.Itisfoundthattheentrancezoneplaysanimportantroleonflowandtemperatureaswellasspeciesdistribution.Therefore,theflowcannotbeassumedeitherasfullydevelopedorasplugflow.Thereisasmallbutstrongthermalexpansionzonebetweenthewallandtheentrance.Bothdiffusionandconvectionaffecttheheatandmasstransferprocessesintheexpansionzone.Thustheequationsofmomentum,energyandspeciesconservationsshouldbeusedtodescribehydrogen/aircombustioninthemonolithreactor.Thehot-spotlocationandconcentrationfieldofthehomogeneouscombustionisstronglyinfluencedbytheinletvelocityandtemperature,andtheequivalenceratio.Thecatalyticcombustionofpremixedhydrogen/airmixtureoverplatinumcatalyst-coatedwallinacylindricalchannelwasalsosimulated.
