Multi-scaleApproachestowardSustainableDevelopmentKeywords: sustainabledevelopment,greenengineering,pollutionprevention,cleanerproduction,industrialecology,multi-scaleapproaches,complexsystems Abstract: Approachestowardthesustainabledevelopmentneedintegratedconsiderationsoftechnical,economical,environmental/ecologicalandsocialissues.Currentapproachesfromdifferentdisciplinescanbegroupedintoatleastthreelevelsmicro-scale,meso-scaleandmacro-scale.Atthemicro-scale,greenchemistrycarriesoutchemicalactivitiessuchaschemicaldesignandsynthesissothatenvironmentallybenignchemicalscanbesynthesizedwithoutusingandgeneratinghazardoussubstances.Greenengineering,atthemeso-scale,developsgreenindustrialprocessesorcleantechnologiesviapollutionpreventionandcleanerproduction,whichwillcauseminimaldamagesordangerstotheenvironmentandecosystemswhentheproductismanufacturedandused.Industrialecologyattheindustrialcomplexorcommunitylevelseekstooptimizeenergyandmaterialsuseandminimizewastegenerationinindustrialsystemsorcommunitiesbypromotingplannedmaterialsandenergyexchanges.Incorporationofecologicalprincipleswiththelifecyclethinkinginthechemicalpathwaysynthesis,productdesign,processdevelopment,andindustrialsystemandcommunityplanningappearstobethemostpromisingengineeringapproachinachievingsustainableindustrialdevelopment.
