Abstract:

Thispaperpresentsaflexiblemodelandarobustalgorithmforsimulationofmulti-stagemulti-componentseparationprocessesinwhichmultiplefeeds,sidestreams,strippersand/orsideheatexchangersareinvolved.Theimprovedalgorithmeffectivelyacceleratesthespeedofconvergenceandoffersbetterstabilitybyintroducingadampingfactorforupdatingthestrippingfactor,andalsoreducestherequirementontheinitialestimatesbyupdatingtheJoacobianmatrixdirectlywiththestrippingfactorandenthalpy.Ontheotherhand,anefficientalgorithmwasproposedtosolvetheapproximatetri-diagonalmatrix(containingtheoff-bandelements)derivedfromthematerialbalanceequations(Mequations)andphaseequilibriumequations(Eequations),theadvantagesandsimplicityofthe"inside-out"techniqueoftheRussellareretained.Thepresentalgorithmwasdemonstratedtobeeffectiveinsimulatingcomplexseparationcolumnswithtypicalcasestudies.
