Abstract:

Amediatormicrobialfuelcell(MFC)wasconstructedbyusingE.coliasbiocatalystandnewmethyleneblueaselectronmediator.E.colicellswerecarriedoutinanaerobicgrowthpriortoinoculatingthemintotheMFCinordertopre-adaptbacterialmetabolisminananaerobicenvironment,theelectricitygenerationofMFCwastested,itsmaximumpowerdensityreached263.94mW/m2withthecorrespondingcurrentdensity1287.50mA/m2,theinternalresistanceofMFCwas200W,andcapabilityoftheMFCwasevenbetterthanthosereportedsofar.Moreover,on-electrodetamingmethodwasadoptedtoimproveelectrochemicalactivityofE.coli,namelyacombinationofE.colitamingandelectricitygenerationsimultaneouslyinthesameMFCwithoutscrapingoffthebiofilmofMFC,afterthe4thon-electrodetaming,thetamedE.coliMFCshoweda54%improvementinpeakcurrentdensity,being612.50mA/m2,anda64%improvementinthemaximumpoweroutput,being166.67mW/m2,comparedwiththatofparentalE.coliMFC.Andthematurationtimeoftamedbiofilmwasobviouslyreducedto240min,quickeningup1timescomparedwiththatofparentalE.colibiofilm.
