The rise of granular computingKeywords: triarchic,theory,of,granular,computing,systems,theory,structured,thinking,problem,solving,and,information,processing Abstract: Thispaperhastwopurposes.Oneistopresentacriticalexaminationoftheriseofgranularcomputingandtheotheristosuggestatriarchictheoryofgranularcomputing.Byexaminingthereasons,justifications,andmotivationsfortheriseofgranularcomputing,wemaybeabletofullyappreciateitsscope,goalandpotentialvalues.Theresultsenableustoformulateatriarchictheoryinthelightofresearchresultsfrommanydisciplines.Thethreecomponentsofthetheoryarelabeledasthephilosophy,themethodology,andthecomputation.Theintegrationofthethreeoffersaunifiedviewofgranularcomputingasawayofstructuredthinking,amethodofstructuredproblemsolving,andaparadigmofstructuredinformationprocessing,focusingonhierarchicalgranularstructures.Thetriarchictheoryisanimportanteffortinsynthesizingthevarioustheoriesandmodelsofgranularcomputing.
