%X Thispaperhastwopurposes.Oneistopresentacriticalexaminationoftheriseofgranularcomputingandtheotheristosuggestatriarchictheoryofgranularcomputing.Byexaminingthereasons,justifications,andmotivationsfortheriseofgranularcomputing,wemaybeabletofullyappreciateitsscope,goalandpotentialvalues.Theresultsenableustoformulateatriarchictheoryinthelightofresearchresultsfrommanydisciplines.Thethreecomponentsofthetheoryarelabeledasthephilosophy,themethodology,andthecomputation.Theintegrationofthethreeoffersaunifiedviewofgranularcomputingasawayofstructuredthinking,amethodofstructuredproblemsolving,andaparadigmofstructuredinformationprocessing,focusingonhierarchicalgranularstructures.Thetriarchictheoryisanimportanteffortinsynthesizingthevarioustheoriesandmodelsofgranularcomputing.
