Understandingsubstormsinthemagnetotail:earlydevelopmentandrecentprogress, PP. 269-293 Keywords: Magnetosphere,Substorm,Magnetotail,Convection,Reconnection,Neutralline,Plasmasheet,Auroralbreakup Abstract: Thisisaconcisereviewofphysicsofthesubstorminthemagnetotail.Itconsistsoftwoparts.Thefirstpartsummarizeshistoricaldevelopmentsintheearlydaysofthespaceage(1960--1975)whenthebasicconceptssuchasmagnetotailandreconnectionwereestablishedandtheleadingmodelofthesubstormwasintroduced.Thesecondpartisanoverviewoftheresearchconductedinrecentyears(1995--2010)whenverysignificantadvanceshavebeenachievedinunderstandingthesubstormphysicsbyvirtueofseveralmajorsatellitesmissionsthataddressedthemagnetotailphysicsintensively.
