%X Thisisaconcisereviewofphysicsofthesubstorminthemagnetotail.Itconsistsoftwoparts.Thefirstpartsummarizeshistoricaldevelopmentsintheearlydaysofthespaceage(1960--1975)whenthebasicconceptssuchasmagnetotailandreconnectionwereestablishedandtheleadingmodelofthesubstormwasintroduced.Thesecondpartisanoverviewoftheresearchconductedinrecentyears(1995--2010)whenverysignificantadvanceshavebeenachievedinunderstandingthesubstormphysicsbyvirtueofseveralmajorsatellitesmissionsthataddressedthemagnetotailphysicsintensively.
