Abstract:

Kelvin-Helmholtz(K-H)wavesareformedfromthetriggeringoftheK-Hinstabilityonthemagnetopause,whichisacandidatemechanismforsolarwindentryintothemagnetosphere,especiallyundernorthwardinterplanetarymagneticfieldconditions.Inthisstudy,aK-HwaveeventwasidentifiedfromtheobservationofprobeBoftheTimeHistoryofEventsandMacroscaleInteractionsduringSubstorms(THEMIS)missionon15May2008.AnewmethodtodeterminethewaveparametersoftheK-Hwavesinsingle-spacecraftobservationsisproposed.Thedominantwaveperiodisdeterminedbythreekindsofspectrogramsforthreekeyparameters,namelytheiondensity,theiontemperature,andthezcomponentofmagneticfield.Thephasevelocityisestimatedbycalculatingthecenter-of-massvelocityofthedetectedK-Hvortexregion.Thisapproximationisvalidatedbycomparisonwithotheralternativemethods.ThemethodtodeterminethewaveparametersisafirststeptofurtherstudyK-Hwavepropertiesandtheirrelationshipwithinterplanetaryconditions.
