Evolutionofneurotransmittergamma-aminobutyricacid,glutamateandtheirreceptorsDOI: 10.3724/SP.J.1141.2012.E05-06E75, PP. 75-81 Keywords: Gamma-aminobutyricacid,Glutamate,Neurotransmitter,Receptor,Evolution,Yinandyangregulation Abstract: Gamma-aminobutyricacid(GABA)andglutamatearetwoimportantaminoacidneurotransmitterswidelypresentinthenervoussystemsofmammals,insects,roundworm,andplatyhelminths,whiletheirreceptorsarequitediversifiedacrossdifferentanimalphyla.However,theevolutionarymechanismsbetweenthetwoconservedneurotransmittersandtheirdiversifiedreceptorsremainelusive,andantagonisticinteractionsbetweenGABAandglutamatesignaltransductionsystems,inparticular,havebeguntoattractsignificantattention.Inthisreview,wesummarizetheextantresultsontheoriginandevolutionofGABAandglutamate,aswellastheirreceptors,andanalyzepossibleevolutionaryprocessesandphylogeneticrelationshipsofvariousGABAsandglutamatereceptors.WefurtherdiscusstheevolutionaryhistoryofExcitatory/NeutralAminoAcidTransporter(EAAT),atransportprotein,whichplaysanimportantroleintheGABA-glutamate“yinandyang”balancedregulation.Finally,basedoncurrentadvances,weproposeseveralpotentialdirectionsoffutureresearch.
