DistributionofserotoninandFMRF-amideinthebrainofLymnaeastagnaliswithrespecttothevisualsystemDOI: 10.3724/SP.J.1141.2012.01-02e1, PP. 1-12 Keywords: Gastropoda,Nervoussystem,Retina,Visualprojections,Retrogradetransport,Immunocytochemistry,Neurotransmitters Abstract: Despiteserotonin’sandFMRF-amide’swidedistributioninthenervoussystemofinvertebratesandtheirimportanceasneurotransmitters,theexactrolestheyplayinneuronalnetworksleavesmanyquestions.WemappedthepresenceofserotoninandFMRF-amide-immunoreactivityinthecentralnervoussystemandeyesofthepondsnailLymnaeastagnalisandinterpretedtheresultsinconnectionwithourearlierfindingsonthecentralprojectionsofdifferentperipheralnerves.SincethechemicalnatureoftheintercellularconnectionsintheretinaofL.stagnalisisstilllargelyunknown,wepaidspecialattentiontoclarifyingtheroleofserotoninandFMRF-amideinthevisualsystemofthissnailandcomparedourfindingswiththosereportedfromotherspecies.Atleastoneserotonin-andoneFMRF-amidergicfibrewerelabeledineachopticnerve,andsincenocellbodiesintheeyeshowedimmunoreactivitytotheseneurotransmitters,webelievethatefferentfibreswithsomatalocatedinthecentralgangliabranchatthebaseoftheeyeandprobablyrelease5HTandFMRF-amideasneuro-hormones.Doublelabellingrevealedretrogradetransportofneurobiotinthroughtheopticnerve,allowingustoconcludethatthecentralpathwaysandserotonin-andFMRF-amide-immunoreactivecellsandfibreshavedifferentlocationsintheCNSinL.stagnalis.Thechemicalnatureofthefibres,whichconnectthetwoeyesinL.stagnalis,isneitherserotoninergicnorFMRF-amidergic.
