Abstract:

Despiteserotonin’sandFMRF-amide’swidedistributioninthenervoussystemofinvertebratesandtheirimportanceasneurotransmitters,theexactrolestheyplayinneuronalnetworksleavesmanyquestions.WemappedthepresenceofserotoninandFMRF-amide-immunoreactivityinthecentralnervoussystemandeyesofthepondsnailLymnaeastagnalisandinterpretedtheresultsinconnectionwithourearlierfindingsonthecentralprojectionsofdifferentperipheralnerves.SincethechemicalnatureoftheintercellularconnectionsintheretinaofL.stagnalisisstilllargelyunknown,wepaidspecialattentiontoclarifyingtheroleofserotoninandFMRF-amideinthevisualsystemofthissnailandcomparedourfindingswiththosereportedfromotherspecies.Atleastoneserotonin-andoneFMRF-amidergicfibrewerelabeledineachopticnerve,andsincenocellbodiesintheeyeshowedimmunoreactivitytotheseneurotransmitters,webelievethatefferentfibreswithsomatalocatedinthecentralgangliabranchatthebaseoftheeyeandprobablyrelease5HTandFMRF-amideasneuro-hormones.Doublelabellingrevealedretrogradetransportofneurobiotinthroughtheopticnerve,allowingustoconcludethatthecentralpathwaysandserotonin-andFMRF-amide-immunoreactivecellsandfibreshavedifferentlocationsintheCNSinL.stagnalis.Thechemicalnatureofthefibres,whichconnectthetwoeyesinL.stagnalis,isneitherserotoninergicnorFMRF-amidergic.
