AdaptationtovisualstimulationmodifiestheburstfiringpropertyofV1neuronsDOI: 10.11813/j.issn.0254-5853.2013.E3.E101 Keywords: Visualadaptation,Burstfiring,Neurons,Primaryvisualcortex,Cat Abstract: Themeanfiringrateofvisualcorticalneuronsisreducedafterprolongedvisualstimulation,buttheunderlyingprocessbywhichthisoccursaswellasthebiologicalsignificanceofthisphenomenonremainsunknown.Computationalneurosciencestudiesindicatethathigh-frequencyburstsinstimulus-drivenresponsescanbetransmittedacrosssynapsesmorereliablythanisolatedspikes,andthusmaycarryaccuratestimulus-relatedinformation.OurresearchexaminedwhetherornotadaptationaffectstheburstfiringpropertyofvisualcorticalneuronsbyexaminingchangesintheburstfiringchangesofV1neuronsduringadaptationtothepreferredvisualstimulus.Theresultsshowthatadaptationtoprolongedvisualstimulationsignificantlydecreasedburstfrequency(bursts/s)andburstlength(spikes/burst),butincreasedburstdurationandtheinterspikeintervalwithinbursts.TheseresultssuggestthattheadaptationofV1neuronstovisualstimulationmayresultinadecreaseoffeedforwardresponsegainbutanincreaseoffunctionalactivitiesfromlateraland/orfeedbackconnections,whichcouldleadtoareductionintheeffectivenessofadaptedneuronsintransmittinginformationtoitsdrivenneurons.
