Abstract:

Themeanfiringrateofvisualcorticalneuronsisreducedafterprolongedvisualstimulation,buttheunderlyingprocessbywhichthisoccursaswellasthebiologicalsignificanceofthisphenomenonremainsunknown.Computationalneurosciencestudiesindicatethathigh-frequencyburstsinstimulus-drivenresponsescanbetransmittedacrosssynapsesmorereliablythanisolatedspikes,andthusmaycarryaccuratestimulus-relatedinformation.OurresearchexaminedwhetherornotadaptationaffectstheburstfiringpropertyofvisualcorticalneuronsbyexaminingchangesintheburstfiringchangesofV1neuronsduringadaptationtothepreferredvisualstimulus.Theresultsshowthatadaptationtoprolongedvisualstimulationsignificantlydecreasedburstfrequency(bursts/s)andburstlength(spikes/burst),butincreasedburstdurationandtheinterspikeintervalwithinbursts.TheseresultssuggestthattheadaptationofV1neuronstovisualstimulationmayresultinadecreaseoffeedforwardresponsegainbutanincreaseoffunctionalactivitiesfromlateraland/orfeedbackconnections,whichcouldleadtoareductionintheeffectivenessofadaptedneuronsintransmittinginformationtoitsdrivenneurons.
