EffectsoftemperatureacclimationonbodymassandenergybudgetintheChinesebulbulPycnonotussinensisDOI: 10.11813/j.issn.0254-5853.2014.1.033, PP. 33-41 Keywords: Bodymass,Energybudget,Pycnonotussinensis,Temperatureacclimation Abstract: Chinesebulbuls(Pycnonotussinensis)aresmallpasserinebirdsthatinhabitareasofcentral,southernandeasternChina.Previousobservationssuggestthatfree-livingindividualsofthisspeciesmaychangetheirfoodintakeinresponsetoseasonalchangesinambienttemperature.Inthepresentstudy,werandomlyassignedChinesebulbulstoeithera30℃or10℃group,andmeasuredtheirbodymass(BM),bodytemperature,grossenergyintake(GEI),digestibleenergyintake(DEI),andthelengthandmassoftheirdigestivetractsover28daysofacclimationatthesetemperatures.Aspredicted,birdsinthe30℃grouphadlowerbodymass,GEIandDEIrelativetothoseinthe10℃group.Thelengthandmassofthedigestivetractwasalsolowerinthe30℃groupandtrendsintheseparameterswerepositivelycorrelatedwithBM,GEIandDEI.TheseresultssuggestthatChinesebulbulsreducedtheirabsoluteenergydemandsatrelativelyhightemperaturesbydecreasingtheirbodymass,GEIandDEI,anddigestivetractsize.
