Abstract:

?TiO2-mediatedphotocatalysisiswidelyusedinavarietyofapplicationsandproductsintheenvironmentalandenergyfields,includingphotoelectrochemicalconversion,self-cleaningsurfaces,andespeciallywaterpurificationsystems.ThedimensionalityofthestructureofaTiO2materialcanaffectitsproperties,functions,andmorespecifically,itsphotocatalyticperformance.Inthiswork,thephotocatalyticinactivationofGram-negativeEscherichiacoliusingthreephotocatalysts,differingintheirstructureandothercharacteristics,wasstudiedinabatchreactorunderUVAlight.TheaimwastoestablishthedisinfectionefficiencyofsolidTiO2comparedwiththatofsuspendedcatalysts,widelyconsideredasreferencecasesforphotocatalyticwaterdisinfection.Thebacterialinactivationprofilesobtainedshowedthat:(1)thephotoinactivationwasexclusivelyrelatedtothequantityofphotonsretainedperunitoftreatedvolume,irrespectiveofthecharacteristicsofthephotocatalystandtheemittedlightfluxdensities;(2)acrossthewholeUVlightrangestudied,eachofthephotocatalyticsolidswasabletoachievemorethan2logbacterialinactivationwithlessthan2hUVirradiation;(3)noneoftheusedcatalystsachievedatotalbacterialdisinfectionduringthetreatmenttime.Foreachofthecatalyststhequantumyieldhasbeenassessedintermsofdisinfectionefficiency,the2Dmaterialshowedalmostthesameperformanceasthoseofsuspendedcatalysts.Thiscatalystispromisingforsupportedphotocatalysisapplications.
