Abstract:

?Theuseofclaymineralsinthesynthesisofnanosizednoblemetalparticlestogiveincreasedcatalyticactivitywasinvestigated.Nanosizedplatinumandrutheniumcatalystsintercalatedinclay(montmorillonite/hectorite)weresynthesisedandtheircatalyticactivitywasevaluatedfortheselectivehydrogenationofthreedifferentα,β-unsaturatedaldehydes,namely,crotonaldehyde,cinnamaldehyde,andcitral,inagasphasemicroreactor.Themetalnano-solwaspreparedbythechemicalreductionofitsprecursorbythemicellartechniqueinthepresenceofcetyltrimethylammoniumbromide(CTAB),andthemicellestabilizedmetalparticleswereintercalatedintheclaymineralbyionexchange.TEMmicrographsofthecatalystparticlesshowedthatthemetalparticleswereinthenanometrerange.Theaveragediametersoftheparticleswere1–25nm.Theeffectsoftemperature,metalloading,andhydrogenflowrateonthecatalyticactivityandselectivityforα,β-unsaturatedalcoholwerestudied.Theresultswerecorrelatedwiththestructuralpropertiesofthecatalysts.Theproductsformedineachreactionoverthedifferentcatalystsshowedthatthecatalystswereveryactiveforhydrogenation,andtheselectivityforthedesiredproduct,namely,α,β-unsaturatedalcohol,wasgood.Themetalcatalystsintercalatedinmontmorilloniteshowedbetterselectivitythanthatinhectoritebecauseofitshigheracidity.Increasedselectivityforα,β-unsaturatedalcoholwasobservedwithincreasedflowrateofhydrogen.
