This article presents a discussion about the contemporary urban identity. It takes Criciúma city as the analysis object during the 1960’s and 1970’s. This work intended to follow the news of the city in the state and nacional press, connecting it with the intervention of the municipal government as marks of a urban identity crisis concentrated on the activity of coal mining.
