Role of Bronchoscopy in the Intensive Care Unit

Respiratory system problems are observed frequently in the intensive care units where health care are provided to critically ill patients. Bronchoscopy can be performed as a diagnostic or a treatment procedure. It is a useful method of evaluation of airways, sampling of specimens for diagnosis and also an invasive procedure where it can be performed in a near-patient settings. Bronchoscopy which is performed to critical care patients is a special and an important diagnostic and invasive procedure with the technique, indications, mechanical ventilation, risks and advantages. This article reviews the role of bronchoscopy in the intensive care unit.
