Myths and images of the Siberian frontier Мифы и образы сибирского фронтира

The paper briefly examines the concept of frontier in connection Siberia. The author attempts to find out whether there existed a real myth of the frontier in Siberia, similar to the one at the American West. The influence of this myth towards public understanding and perception of Siberia is discussed. Negative and positive images of Siberia and Siberian dwellers (the ‘sibiryaki’) are described. The author proves that the Siberian frontier myth has not been settled yet in spite of the existence of various regional images В статье кратко рассматривается теория фронтира применительно к сибирскому краю. Анализируется вопрос о существовании в Сибири мифа о фронтире по образу и подобию такового на американском Западе и о степени его влияния на общественное сознание и восприятие. Рассмотрены положительный и негативный образы Сибири и сибиряка. Доказывается несформированность сибирского мифа при существовании только разрозненных региональных образов.
