Cortesía pragmática e historia de las ideas: "face" y "freedom" (Pragmatic politeness and history of ideas: "face" and "freedom")

Las críticas a la teoría de la cortesía de Brown y Levinson (1978, 1987) se han centrado en la noción de imagen negativa ("negative face"). Esta noción se ha relacionado con la de culto negativo de Durkheim (1982 [1912]) y con la de territorio de Goffman (1972 [1967]); no obstante, los críticos no han tenido en cuenta el concepto de libertad –libertad de acción y libertad de imposición– que aparece en su definición. Esta idea de libertad es propia de la cultura anglosajona y se corresponde con la noción de libertad negativa ("negative liberty") del historiador de las ideas Isaiah Berlin (2004). Otras teorías de la cortesía posteriores –la de Watts (2003), por ejemplo– no recurren a un concepto de libertad como fundamento. Se trata, pues, de una peculiaridad de la teoría de Brown y Levinson que explica algunas de las críticas que ha recibido. (Brown and Levinson's Theory of Politeness (1978, 1987) has been criticized for its concept of negative face, a notion related to the idea of negative cult (Durkheim, 1982 [1912]) and to the idea of territory (Goffman, 1972 [1967]). The concept of freedom –freedom of action and freedom from imposition– however, which is actually a part of the definition of the theory, has so far not been taken into account by its critics. This idea of freedom is peculiar to Anglo-Saxon culture, and corresponds to the notion of negative liberty espoused by the historian of ideas Isaiah Berlin (2004).
