Jorge Luis Borges and literary criticism in Latin America: a analysis about the concepts of “nationality” and “local identity” in Latin America from the essays and the literary works made by this renowned Argentine writerKeywords: Jorge Luis Borges , National Literatures , Latin America , Literary Criticism , Borges’s short story Abstract: This article reflects some of the most famous texts (essays and stories) from the Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges, and arranges a dialogue between them and texts from other thinkers considered as great names of Literary Criticism in Latin America: Ricardo Piglia (from Argentina), Antonio Candido and Silviano Santiago (from Brazil), and Octávio Paz (from Mexico). The goal is to highlight some of the most recurrent issues and how we have replied to these issues; is to draw a picture of what the Latin americans intellectuals think about the social and artistic function of literature in and for our continent.
