Harrison White : des réseaux sociaux à une théorie structurale de l'action

Harrison White est une figure centrale de la sociologie nord-américaine et un important théoricien des réseaux sociaux. Son livre Identity and Control, dont la première édition a été publiée en 1992 et dont une seconde édition est en cours de préparation, présente une théorie structurale de l’action sociale qui se propose de modifier profondément notre regard sociologique. Cet article suggère un premier cheminement à travers les principaux concepts d’Identity and Control et tente de dégager les principales innovations théoriques et méthodologiques qui en font un ouvrage majeur. En particulier, Identity and Control permet un dépassement des oppositions classiques en sociologie (micro/macro, individualisme/holisme, expérience subjective/structure, statique/dynamique) en s’appuyant sur une perspective centrée sur les réseaux sociaux et les réseaux sémantiques et en proposant un certain nombre de concepts nouveaux ou reconstruits de fa on non conventionnelle (en particulier : disciplines, styles, rhétoriques, régimes).
