%X Harrison White est une figure centrale de la sociologie nord-am¨¦ricaine et un important th¨¦oricien des r¨¦seaux sociaux. Son livre Identity and Control, dont la premi¨¨re ¨¦dition a ¨¦t¨¦ publi¨¦e en 1992 et dont une seconde ¨¦dition est en cours de pr¨¦paration, pr¨¦sente une th¨¦orie structurale de l¡¯action sociale qui se propose de modifier profond¨¦ment notre regard sociologique. Cet article sugg¨¨re un premier cheminement ¨¤ travers les principaux concepts d¡¯Identity and Control et tente de d¨¦gager les principales innovations th¨¦oriques et m¨¦thodologiques qui en font un ouvrage majeur. En particulier, Identity and Control permet un d¨¦passement des oppositions classiques en sociologie (micro/macro, individualisme/holisme, exp¨¦rience subjective/structure, statique/dynamique) en s¡¯appuyant sur une perspective centr¨¦e sur les r¨¦seaux sociaux et les r¨¦seaux s¨¦mantiques et en proposant un certain nombre de concepts nouveaux ou reconstruits de fa on non conventionnelle (en particulier : disciplines, styles, rh¨¦toriques, r¨¦gimes). Harrison White : from social networks to a structural theory of actionHarrison White is a major figure of North American sociology and an important theorist of social network analysis. His book Identity and Control, first published in 1992 and currently being revised for a second edition, proposes a structural theory of social action that aims at substantially modifying our sociological imagination. This article suggests a first understanding of the main concepts of Identity and Control and attempts to uncover the main theoretical and methodological innovations of this major book. More specifically, Identity and Control goes beyond traditional sociological dichotomies such as micro/macro, individualism/holism, experience/structure, static/dynamic by relying on an approach based on social networks and networks of meaning and by proposing a set of concepts that are either new or reconstructed in an unconventional way (such as disciplines, styles, rhetorics, or regimes).
