Realism rendering based on mesostructure and BRDF

Abstract:
Mesostructure is crucial for rendering the detailed structure of a surface. How to represent the mesostructure effectively is one of important research areas in CG. A rendering algorithm based on ray-traclng on the mesostructure was proposed. In the algorithm, firstly a mesostructure mesh was constructed, then self-shadow and occlusion on the mesostrueture were calculated by ray-tracing on the mesh. Finally the reflection was determined by querying measured BRDF data according to the view direction and light direction. Therefore. the mesostructure and gloss of a surface could be rendered realistically.
