Abstract: the french enlightenment does not think that freedom of conscience and religion is a broad and neutral right. the terms depict a meaning narrower than that which, at first sight, is suggested. the writings of voltaire and the encyclopédie consider said freedom, per essence and per system, as separated from the christian god and his law. the anti-christian disposition, the religious agnosticism and the metaphysical skepticism are the basis for this modern freedom.
