How really extensive is the original material of Juncus kochii (Juncaceae)? - A taxonomic and nomenclatural revision

Abstract: The identity of the original material of Juncus kochii F. W. Schultz (Juncaceae) is discussed. The taxon at present is best regarded as Juncus bulbosus L. subsp. kochii (F. W. Schultz) Reichg. The relevant literature (protologue and references therein) was searched and details of all original elements were compiled. Nomenclatural and taxonomic remarks are given. Juncus welwitschii Hochst. ex Steud. is here excluded as a synonym of Juncus bulbosus subsp. kochii.

Abstract: The first localities of Juncus bulbosus (Juncaceae) for South America (Chile) and for the whole south-western part of the world (S latitude and E longitude) are described, including precise geographical location and climatic conditions. General remarks on the invasiveness of the species and on the possibility of finding it in other parts of the world are given. The distribution of the species world-wide requires further studies, since the bulbous rush has become an invasive plant in areas where it did not occur before.

Abstract: The identity of the potential original material of Juncus kochii is discussed. The taxon at present is best regarded as Juncus bulbosus L. subsp. kochii (F.W. Schultz) Reichg. The relevant literature (protologue and references therein) was searched and details of all residual original elements were compiled. Taxonomic remarks are given. The herbarium material from the environs of Bitche (Moselle, Lorraine) and Gérardmer (Vosges, Lorraine) – both in France, has been rejected as useless for typification of J. kochii (because of taxonomic reasons), though it was listed both in the protologue and also as indirect references therein Schultz’s earlier publications.

Abstract: We propose a new approach for using GPUs in large scale simulations of pedestrian evacuation. The Social Distances Model is designed for efficient modeling of pedestrian dynamics. This cellular automata based model, when implemented on the most modern GPUs, can simulate up to 106–108 entities. However, a valuable simulation of pedestrian evacuation must include various factors that govern pedestrian movement, for example, information provided by event organizers and navigation or allocation of other pedestrians. The most common method for introducing such information into simulations is the application of different floor fields. The floor fields provide “local knowledge” that affects pedestrians by modifying the transition functions of an applied cellular automaton. The main disadvantage of this method is its time consuming updating process. We propose a GPU based calculation of static and dynamic floor fields, whereby simulations that use several different floor fields can be efficiently calculated. A single GPU is able to cope with the Social Distance Model calculations, while other GPUs update dynamic floor fields constantly or when required. We also present the classic approach to performing cellular automata based simulations on systems with multiple processing units. The lattice is simply partitioned between the available GPUs. We compare these two approaches in terms of performance and functionality

The Solar Dial in the Olsztyn Castle: Its Construction and Relation to Copernicus

Abstract: The article discusses the construction, function, and origin of the solar dial in the Olsztyn Castle, traditionally attributed to Copernicus. The dial, preserved partially on the wall of the cloister and presumably designed to determine the time of equinoxes, served as an astronomical instrument mapping the daily paths of the sun in the sky. The article provides a comprehensive mathematical model of the instrument, taking into account the astronomical and architectural factors which affected its functioning. The analysis allows to alienate the essential properties of the dial as an observational instrument and to contend that measurements were recorded indelibly on the wall and averaged by interpolation. Furthermore, it reconsiders the arguments which support the hypothesis ascribing the construction of the Olsztyn instrument to Copernicus. Preliminary results on allozyme diversity and differentiation of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) in Poland based on plus tree investigations

Abstract: Genetic diversity and genetic differentiation among Polish populations of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) were studied analyzing allozyme variation at 24 loci. Presented investigations based on 81 clones represented 6 populations from three different regions: Sudety Mts., Beskid Mts. and North-East Poland. On average, the expected heterozygosity was 0.134, 52.8% of loci were polymorphic, and the number of alleles per locus was 1.8. Our data confirm the hypothesis that a lower level of variation of Picea abies exists in central Europe, compared to other regions of its natural distribution. Relatively small allozyme differentiation among regions was observed (Fst =0.027, and Nei's genetic distances ranged from 0.005 to 0.008). Reasons for the low genetic differentiation observed between Southern and Northern populations are briefly discussed.
